Chapter 9 - The Return to Preston Hollow

Two weeks after the Brussels showdown, our private jet touched down on the tarmac at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.
The Texas autumn air was warm, sweet, and comforting. The global expansion was secure, our European logistics corridors were locked in, and Brooks Meridian Logistics was operating at a scale that made financial history.
That evening, Alexander Vance hosted a quiet, celebratory dinner at the Preston Hollow estate.
We sat around the heavy teak patio table under the canopy of stars, surrounded by the quiet, soothing hum of the Texas night. The sprawling gardens were illuminated by warm lantern light, and the gentle splash of the infinity pool provided a peaceful backdrop to our laughter.
Alexander poured three glasses of vintage Napa Valley Cabernet, handing one to me and one to Sofia, who sat across the table looking radiant, healthy, and overflowing with creative energy as her interior design firm prepared for its upcoming New York expansion.
“To global conquests, international trade monopolies, and defeating old-school European tyrants before dinner,” Alexander toasted, his dark eyes sparkling with profound paternal pride as he raised his glass.
Sofia laughed, clinking her glass against his. “And to never letting anyone tell you what seat you belong in.”
I smiled, raising my glass to meet theirs, letting the deep, rich warmth of the wine settle into my chest.
“You know,” Alexander said thoughtfully, leaning back in his chair, “watching you dismantle Viktor Vance’s shipping cartel from a conference room in Brussels made me realize something very important.”
“What’s that, Dad?” Sofia asked.
“I spent forty years building legal arguments in federal courtrooms and corporate boardrooms,” Alexander rumbled with a faint, proud grin. “I thought I taught you everything there is to know about strategy, strength, and survival.”

He looked directly at me, his gaze softening with infinite respect.
“But you didn't just learn the rules of the board, sweetheart. You rewrote the entire table.”
