Chapter 5 - The Hostile Takeover

The heavy mahogany door of the administrator’s office slammed shut, muffling the frightened whispers of the clinic staff outside.
Marcus Vance slumped against the back of his leather chair, drenched in a cold sweat, staring up at Tariq Al-Zayn as if he were looking at the angel of death. Kael stood like a silent monolith beside the door, blocking every possible exit.
Tariq sat down uninvited in the visitor’s chair opposite the desk. He crossed one long leg over the other, resting his hands casually on his knee. He didn't speak for a full thirty seconds, letting the suffocating silence crush whatever fragile bravado Marcus had left.
“Mr. Al-Zayn, please,” Marcus finally choked out, wiping his forehead with a crumpled tissue. “If this is about the zoning permits, or the municipal liens... Apex Holdings can negotiate a settlement. We didn't mean to violate any maritime transport contracts or—ingore regional supply lines—”
“You misunderstand, Marcus,” Tariq interrupted, his voice smooth, quiet, and absolutely lethal. “I didn't come here to negotiate a settlement with Apex Holdings. I came here to purchase your entire debt portfolio.”
Marcus blinked, stunned. “P-purchase the portfolio? But Julian Vance holds the master notes on St. Jude’s. He won't sell—not for ten times its book value—”
Tariq reached into his inner coat pocket and pulled out a single, pristine sheet of heavy parchment paper, sliding it slowly across the scarred wooden desk.
Marcus looked down at the document. His eyes bulged out of his head.
It was a binding financial instrument—an emergency corporate acquisition notice executed forty-five minutes ago through a Swiss holding company. Tariq’s financial juggernaut had quietly bought up controlling shares of the parent corporation backing Apex Holdings, effectively making Tariq the majority stakeholder of the entire conglomerate.
“Julian Vance ceased being a decision-maker twenty minutes ago when the Tokyo markets opened,” Tariq said calmly, watching the color drain completely from Marcus’s face. “His assets are frozen, his board seats have been vacated, and his entire regional real estate portfolio—including this clinic—now belongs to me.”
Marcus stared at the signature at the bottom of the page. Tariq Al-Zayn. There was no appeal. No legal loophole. The predator had just been eaten by a shark ten times his size.
“And you...” Tariq continued, his dark gaze locking onto Marcus with an intensity that made the administrator shrink back into his chair. “You have exactly five minutes to clear your personal belongings out of this office, hand over the master keys to the medical supply accounts, and catch a one-way flight out of the state. If I ever see your face within fifty miles of a medical facility again, you won't just lose your job—you’ll lose your freedom.”
Marcus didn't hesitate for a single second. He scrambled out of his chair, grabbed a cardboard box from the corner, tossed his desk clock and family photos inside, and practically sprinted out the side door without looking back.
Tariq sat alone in the quiet office for a moment. He picked up his encrypted phone and dialed a direct, high-priority line.
“Vance,” Tariq spoke into the receiver.
“Yes, Boss?” came the prompt voice of his chief of staff in New York.
“Transfer five million dollars immediately into St. Jude’s operational account. Clear all patient debts, upgrade the pediatric wing with state-of-the-art respiratory equipment, and dispatch a private air ambulance to transport Martha Miller to the regional medical center under the direct care of the top pulmonary specialist in the country.”
“Consider it done, Mr. Al-Zayn. Estimated time of arrival for the funds: two minutes.”
Tariq hung up the phone, stood up, and straightened his jacket. As he opened the office door and walked back out into the reception area, he found Chloe standing by the front desk, holding her phone, staring at her banking app with her mouth open so wide she looked like she had seen a ghost.
The screen of her phone was flashing with a bright green notification:
Account Balance: $5,000,000.00. Status: Fully Funded / All Debts Cleared.
Chloe slowly raised her head, her eyes swimming with bewildered tears as she looked across the room at the most powerful, terrifying billionaire in the financial district.
“What... what did you just do?” she whispered, her voice trembling violently.
May you like
Tariq walked slowly toward her, stopping just a foot away. The cold, ruthless aura that defined his public life seemed to soften around the edges when he looked into her eyes.
“Your mother’s appointment is at eight o'clock, Chloe,” Tariq said softly, a faint, rare smile touching his lips. “And I hate being late.”
