Chapter 6 - The Private Air Ambulance

The rotor blades of the sleek, matte-black AgustaWestland helicopter churned the morning air into a deafening roar, kicking up swirls of dust across the helipad of the regional medical center fifty miles north.
Inside the climate-controlled cabin, Martha Miller lay comfortably on a specialized, high-tech medical stretcher, surrounded by state-of-the-art life-support monitors that blinked with steady, reassuring green rhythms. Two elite trauma nurses, personally handpicked and flown in from Zurich by Tariq’s private medical division, monitored her vitals with absolute precision.
Chloe sat on the leather bench seat beside her mother’s stretcher, holding Martha’s frail, pale hand in both of hers. Her chest still felt tight, as if she were living inside an elaborate, surreal dream from which she was terrified of waking up.
Just two hours ago, her mother had been struggling for every breath in a drafty apartment bed while mounting collection notices piled up on the kitchen table. Now, she was surrounded by the finest medical equipment money could buy, scheduled for an experimental, life-saving lung transplant procedure performed by the country’s leading cardiothoracic surgeon—Dr. Harrison Vance, unrelated to the disgraced Apex executives, and widely considered a living legend in medical science.
The cabin door slid open smoothly.
Tariq stepped inside, ducking slightly beneath the low ceiling, and took a seat opposite Chloe. He wore his crisp, tailored suit, looking entirely unbothered by the turbulence of the morning’s hostile corporate takeover.
“The chief surgeon has reviewed your mother’s updated pulmonary scans,” Tariq said quietly, his voice pitched just loud enough to cut through the low hum of the engines. “The experimental procedure has a ninety-four percent success rate under his care. She’s going to be fine, Chloe.”
Chloe looked up from her mother’s face, her dark eyes shining with unshed tears. She swallowed hard, struggling to find the right words.
“I don't understand,” she whispered, her voice cracking slightly. “Why? Why are you doing this? You’re... you’re Tariq Al-Zayn. You don't even know me. We sat next to each other on a four-hour flight by pure accident. Why spend millions of dollars on a complete stranger?”
Tariq looked at her for a long moment, his dark, piercing eyes holding an unspoken depth of history—memories of a time long ago when he, too, had stood powerless in a sterile hospital corridor, watching someone he loved slip away while wealthy men in glass towers counted their profits.
“It wasn't an accident, Chloe,” Tariq replied, his tone steady and resolute. “Some people spend their entire lives building walls to keep the world out. Sometimes, it takes a exhausted nurse falling asleep on your shoulder to remind you what it actually feels like to be human.”
Chloe’s breath hitched. A warm, terrifying flutter blossomed in her chest. She looked away, staring down at her fingers entwined with her mother’s.
“I can never pay you back,” she murmured. “A five-million-dollar endowment... the clinic, the medical bills, the transport... I’m just a pediatric nurse. I’ll be paying you off for the rest of my life.”
“Who said anything about repayment?” Tariq asked smoothly.
Chloe snapped her head back up, her eyes wide. “What do you mean?”
“St. Jude’s Clinic needs a director of pediatric medicine—someone who actually cares about the children who walk through those doors instead of quarterly profit margins,” Tariq said, leaning forward slightly, resting his elbows on his knees. “And as for the debt... consider it a strategic investment in a very stubborn, fiercely dedicated nurse who refused to give up.”
Before Chloe could formulate a reply, the helicopter pilot’s voice came over the intercom: “Approaching the private helipad at the medical institute. Landing in two minutes.”
As the aircraft descended smoothly toward the gleaming glass-and-steel towers of the medical center, Chloe realized her entire world had fundamentally shifted on its axis. The exhausted, desperate girl who had boarded Flight 704 forty-eight hours ago was gone.

In her place stood someone new—someone protected by the most powerful, ruthless man in the financial world.
Little did she know, Julian Vance wasn't going to take his defeat lying down. And the war for St. Jude’s was only just beginning.
