Chapter 4 - The Poison in the Spoon

By seven in the morning, the kitchen was bright with pale, watery sunlight. Claire was at the stove, humming a cheerful tune as she scrambled eggs in a non-stick skillet. She was wearing an ivory knit sweater and pearl earrings, looking for all the world like a woman preparing a wholesome breakfast for a reunited family.

Daniel entered the kitchen carrying an empty coffee mug. He had showered, shaved, and put on clean denim and a dark flannel shirt. He moved with an exaggerated, sluggish posture, rubbing his eyes like a man who hadn't slept in three days.

"Morning, darling," Claire said brightly, turning from the stove to offer him a dazzling smile. "Did you sleep well? You look exhausted."

"Time zones are catching up with me," Daniel mumbled, pouring coffee from the pot. "My body thinks it's mid-afternoon in Riyadh."

"Well, you just relax today," she said, sliding two plates onto the small kitchen table. "Eggs, sourdough toast, and fresh preserves. Eat up. You need your strength."

Daniel sat down. "How is Mom this morning?"

Claire let out a heavy, theatrical sigh, her shoulders slumping in practiced sorrow. "She had a rough night, Daniel. Woke up around four screaming about fire. I had to give her a mild sedative just to keep her from tearing her own skin off. I'm going to take her breakfast down in a minute."

Daniel watched as Claire turned to the counter. On the cutting board sat a small ceramic ramekin containing three tablespoons of applesauce. Beside it lay a small pill crusher and a yellow gelatin capsule.

Claire picked up the capsule, twisted it open, and tapped the pale yellow powder into the applesauce. She picked up a teaspoon and stirred the mixture with quick, practiced strokes until the powder dissolved into the translucent fruit.

"What medication is that?" Daniel asked, leaning back in his chair, taking a slow sip of black coffee.

Claire’s hand didn't tremble, but her stirring slowed by half a beat. "Just her memory supplement and an anti-anxiety compound Dr. Vance prescribed."

"Dr. Vance?" Daniel raised an eyebrow. "I didn't know we had a relative practicing medicine in the county."

"It's just an expression, Daniel," Claire said quickly, a faint flush rising along her collarbones. "Dr. Julian Vance. No relation. He’s a geriatric specialist out of Allentown. He’s been overseeing her home care."

Daniel knew there was no Dr. Julian Vance registered with the Pennsylvania State Medical Board. He had spent an hour between two and three AM searching the state licensing registries on his laptop. The only Vance with a medical license in the tri-state area was a pediatric dentist in Scranton.

"Let me take it down to her," Daniel offered, starting to rise from his chair. "I should spend some time with her this morning. Let her see my face."

"No!"

The word came out sharper than Claire intended. She caught herself immediately, softening her expression with a nervous, breathless laugh.

"I mean... she gets agitated by men in the morning, Daniel. It’s part of the trauma from her delusions. She thinks any man entering the room is an intruder. It’s better if I do it. She’s used to my routine."

"All right," Daniel said, sinking back into his chair with a passive shrug. "You're the expert."

Claire picked up the tray—the ramekin of poisoned applesauce, a glass of water, and a single slice of toast—and walked down the hallway toward the guest room.

The moment the swinging door settled, Daniel pulled a sterile specimen container—an empty amber glass vial he had taken from his first-aid kit—out of his pocket. He moved to the counter where Claire had prepared the dish.

On the marble surface, a dusting of fine yellow powder remained around the edges of the plastic pill crusher. Daniel unscrewed the vial, took a clean butter knife from the drawer, and carefully scraped the residual powder into the glass container. He sealed it, slid it back into his pocket, and returned to his seat before Claire’s footsteps sounded in the hall.

She returned empty-handed, looking satisfied. "She took it like an angel," Claire announced, wiping her hands on a dish towel. "She'll sleep until mid-afternoon. Mason called while I was in there. He’s running some errands in town, but he’ll be here by four with the final closing documents for the estate."

"Good," Daniel said, cutting into his scrambled eggs. "Let's get it over with."

"You're doing the right thing, Daniel," Claire said, walking behind his chair, resting her hands on his shoulders, and pressing a kiss to the top of his head. "We're going to build an amazing life together. Just you and me. No more deserts. No more sickbeds."

Daniel felt the warmth of her breath against his scalp. It felt like the heat off an exhaust manifold—dry, hollow, and carrying the faint scent of copper.

May you like

"Just you and me, Claire," he echoed quietly.
