Chapter 8 - The Cornered Vipers

The guest room was silent, save for the steady, reassuring patter of rain against the window glass.
Daniel stepped inside, followed softly by Marcus Reyes.
Martha was sitting upright on the edge of the bed. Her feet, pale and bare, were resting on the braided wool rug. She was wearing a clean flannel nightgown that Daniel had laid out for her that morning. When she saw Daniel enter, she reached out both hands.
Daniel crossed the room and dropped to his knees before her. He took her hands in his, pressing his face into her palms.
"It's over, Mom," Daniel whispered, his voice finally cracking, the five years of suppressed strain and terror breaking through the surface. "They're gone. The police have them. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again."
Martha’s thin fingers curled around his cheeks, lifting his head until his eyes met hers. Her face was pale, the bruise on her cheekbone still dark, but her gaze was crystal clear, untainted by the chemical fog that had imprisoned her for months.
"I knew you'd come, Danny," she said, her voice steady and warm. "I looked at that little red light every single night when the darkness was thickest, and I told myself: *My boy is watching. My boy is coming home.*"
Marcus Reyes stepped forward, removing his soaked hat, his weather-beaten face softening into a profound, gentle respect. "Martha," he said softly. "It’s Marcus. Jim's old partner."
Martha looked up at him, a faint, beautiful smile gracing her lips. "Hello, Marcus. You're getting gray."
"It happens to the best of us, Martha," Reyes chuckled, wiping a stray drop of rain from his cheek. "We have an ambulance waiting at the end of the driveway. Dr. Morrison from county general is out there. We need to take you in for a full medical evaluation, flush that garbage out of your liver, and document every scrape on your arms for the district attorney."
"Will Danny come with me?" she asked, her grip on Daniel’s hands tightening.
May you like
"I'm riding in the back with you, Mom," Daniel said. "I'm not leaving your side."
