Chapter 7 - The Collapse

Frank dropped his speech notes. The white papers drifted over the podium, scattering across the carpeted stage like oversized snowflakes.
"Josephine?" Diane whispered, her hands flying to her mouth.
"Jo!" Frank lunged toward the microphone, his voice cracking into an octave of panic. "Jo, you’re alive! Thank God! We thought... the authorities told us you were missing in Chicago!"
"You didn't think I was in Chicago, Frank," I said, walking down the central aisle. My stride was slow, measured, completely devoid of a limp. "You saw me on the second-floor landing at 2:17 a.m. You saw me standing five feet from the window."
"You were confused by the smoke, darling," Miriam stammered, rising from her chair. Her knees buckled slightly, but she caught the arm of the chair. "We tried to find you! We screamed your name!"
"You didn't scream my name," I said, stopping ten feet from the stage. "You looked at me, Miriam. You held Diane’s hand, and you said: *We can’t risk losing our daughter.*"
A collective gasp rippled through the crowd.
Neighbors who had known the Calloways for twenty years began glancing at one another in mounting disbelief.
"She’s traumatized!" Frank shouted, gesturing frantically toward the attendees. "The shock of the fire has affected her mind! Someone call an ambulance!"
"The only people who need an ambulance are your attorneys, Frank," Evelyn Vance's crisp voice cut through the room as she stepped forward.
She turned to face the audience and the plainclothes detectives who had fanned out along the sides of the hall.
"Three days ago," Evelyn stated with clinical precision, "Frank and Miriam Calloway submitted a sworn affidavit to the probate court claiming Josephine Calloway had perished in the fire, requesting an expedited transfer of the Helen Vance Trust. Yesterday morning, the state fire lab completed its spectrometry analysis of the basement floorboards."
Evelyn looked directly at Frank.
"The accelerant used was an industrial solvent purchased under the corporate account of Calloway Engineering on October 14th. The security footage from the supply depot in Parma shows you loading four five-gallon drums into the trunk of your car."

Frank’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.
