Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The trial did not take long. Faced with security footage, financial paper trails, and Diane’s immediate plea deal to testify against them, Frank and Miriam Calloway folded.

Frank pleaded guilty to aggravated arson, insurance fraud, and attempted murder. He received twenty-eight years at Mansfield Correctional Institution.

Miriam was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and perjury, drawing a fourteen-year sentence at Marysville.

Diane received five years of probation and community service for her role in concealing financial records, but the social penalty was absolute; the country clubs, the foundation boards, and the wealthy social circles she craved slammed their doors in her face forever.

On my thirty-second birthday, I sat in Evelyn Vance’s office once again.

There were no tears. Just a stack of certified legal documents that required my signature.

With four strokes of a fountain pen, the Helen Vance Trust was transferred entirely into my name. The Elmhurst property—now just a cleared, leveled plot of black soil—belonged to me. The stock portfolios, the family heirlooms held in bank vaults, and the liquid capital all moved into an account bearing only one name: Josephine Vance.

I dropped the name Calloway at the county courthouse the following morning.

"What will you do with the land?" Evelyn asked as she handed me my new passport.

"Sell it to the township," I replied without hesitation. "They want to turn it into a community park. Let children play where they tried to bury me."

Evelyn smiled—a real, genuine smile that softened the hard lines around her mouth. "Your grandmother would have approved."
