Chapter 10 - The Horizon

Three months later, the world outside the penthouse window had changed completely, but inside, the air felt lighter than it ever had.
The federal case against Julian Vance and the old guard had resulted in a sweep of convictions that permanently dismantled the criminal syndicate operating inside Moretti Enterprises. The company was now fully transparent, legitimized, and clean.
And upstairs, in the sunlit nursery, three-year-old Leo was currently engaged in an epic battle with a stuffed dinosaur, giggling so hard he could barely breathe.
I sat on the white sofa, watching him through the open door, a mug of coffee in my hand.
A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around my waist from behind, and a warm chin rested softly on my shoulder.
“You’re smiling,” Ricardo murmured against my neck, his breath sending a shiver of pure happiness down my spine.
“I was just thinking about how far we’ve come since that night at Il Verano,” I said, leaning back into his solid, comforting embrace. “If someone had told me I’d be living in a Manhattan penthouse with a reformed mafia billionaire and his adorable son, I would have called an ambulance.”
Ricardo chuckled softly, turning me around in his arms so I was facing him. He looked healthy, relaxed, the heavy, paranoid shadow that used to haunt his eyes completely gone.
“You didn't just save my son, Clara,” Ricardo whispered, his dark eyes shining with an intensity that took my breath away. “You saved me. You brought light back into a house that had forgotten how to breathe.”
He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small velvet box.
My heart hammered against my ribs.
Ricardo knelt down on one knee right there on the polished hardwood floor of the penthouse, opening the box to reveal a stunning, brilliant-cut diamond ring that caught the morning sunlight like liquid fire.
“I know my world is complicated, and the threats are never truly zero,” Ricardo said, his voice thick with emotion. “But I promise you, for the rest of my life, I will protect you, I will cherish you, and I will never let any darkness touch this family again. Clara Vance… will you stay? Will you be my wife, and Leo’s mother, forever?”
Tears welled up in my eyes, spilling over my eyelashes, but I was smiling so hard my cheeks ached.
I threw my arms around his neck, pulling him up into a fierce, desperate embrace.
“Yes,” I whispered against his lips. “Yes, a million times yes.”

As Ricardo kissed me—deeply, passionately, with all the love and devotion of a man who had finally found his way home—the distant sounds of New York City faded away. Down the hall, Leo squealed with laughter, shouting, “Group hug!” and patter-pattered across the floor to throw his little arms around both of us.
The glass cage wasn't a cage anymore. It was a home. And for the first time in my life, I knew I was exactly where I belonged.
