Chapter 8 - The Chessboard

The rain continued to lash against the reinforced glass of the Hudson Valley safehouse through the night, but inside, the atmosphere had shifted from defensive terror to calculated war.
By dawn, Dante Russo had set up a secure satellite uplink in the estate’s wood-paneled library. The screens glowed with live feeds of Manhattan, corporate registry databases, and encrypted financial wire transfers.
I stood by the window, watching the mist rise off the river, while Ricardo leaned over the central desk, reviewing a dossier on Julian Vance.
“He’s calling a emergency shareholder meeting for tomorrow morning at nine sharp,” Dante reported, tapping a pencil against the digital map. “Official agenda: voting on a hostile takeover of Moretti Enterprises due to the CEO’s ‘incapacity and personal tragedy.’ If the board votes in his favor, Julian assumes full operational control of the assets, the shell companies, and the offshore accounts.”
“And if he gains control, he liquidates everything—including us,” Ricardo added calmly, his eyes narrowing. “He thinks I’m dead or running for the border. He thinks he’s won.”
“So how do we stop him?” I asked, stepping closer to the desk. “We can’t just walk into a corporate board meeting in Manhattan. Your security detail would trigger a firefight the second we crossed the lobby.”
Ricardo looked up, a dark, brilliant glint in his eyes. He stood up, walked over to me, and gently placed his hands on my shoulders.
“We don't walk in through the lobby, Clara,” he said softly. “You do.”
I blinked, taking a step back. “Me? What am I supposed to do? Walk into a room full of billionaire sociopaths and ask them nicely to stop being evil?”
“No,” Ricardo smiled—a fierce, devastating expression. “You walk in as the rightful heir to the Vance family estate. Did you know that under your father’s original will, Julian was only ever the executor of your trust, not the owner? Two years ago, when you turned twenty-five, the legal control of his voting shares legally reverted to you. He forged your signature to lock you out of the company.”
My jaw dropped. “Forged my signature?”
“With a digital notary that my forensic team hacked yesterday,” Ricardo said, pulling a folded legal document from his breast pocket and handing it to me. “This is an emergency injunction signed by a federal judge, freezing all of Julian’s voting blocks, revoking his corporate authority, and restoring your full ownership rights over the Vance family portfolio.”
I stared at the thick parchment paper, my hands trembling. “I… I own twenty percent of the Vance estate?”
“Enough to swing the board vote against him tomorrow morning,” Ricardo murmured, stepping in close enough that I could feel the heat of his chest. “When Julian stands up in front of the board to crown himself king, the doors open, and you walk in. And I will be right behind you.”
I looked up into his dark, unwavering eyes. The fear that had gripped my heart for the last forty-eight hours suddenly evaporated, replaced by a cold, righteous surge of empowerment.
Julian Vance had spent years treating me like dirt, stealing my inheritance, and reducing my life to a struggle for survival.

It was time to take back what was mine. And help the man I was falling in love with burn an empire to the ground.
“Let’s do it,” I said firmly.
