Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

Within forty-five minutes, the flashing blue and red emergency lights of Metro Police cruisers and unmarked federal vehicles cast frantic, dancing shadows across the gothic stone facade of Blackwood Manor.

The estate, once a symbol of unassailable prestige and family harmony, was now a sealed crime scene.

Inside the grand library—where Daniel had spent countless evenings sipping whiskey while discussing corporate expansion with Vanessa—the atmosphere was thick with tension. Clara had been wrapped in a warm wool blanket and taken to a private guest suite upstairs by paramedics, flanked by a bewildered but protective little Lily who refused to leave her mother’s side.

Daniel stood by the massive stone fireplace, holding a snifter of neat bourbon he hadn't touched.

Detective Marcus Vance—a veteran investigator with sharp eyes and an unyielding demeanor—closed his notebook with a sharp snap as he finished questioning the estate housekeeper who had been quietly cooperating with police downstairs.

“Well, Mr. Blackwood,” Detective Vance said, walking over to stand near the desk. “The forensics team has opened the subterranean holding cell. It’s fully wired with independent climate control, a chemical toilet, and a heavy reinforced steel door matching security specifications used in maximum-security psychiatric wards. According to the original architectural addendums we recovered from the county clerk’s office this evening, that room was secretly installed five years ago under a falsified medical renovation permit signed by... Vanessa Blackwood.”

Daniel stared into the amber liquid in his glass. “She used forged corporate documents and my signature stamps while I was recovering from grief-induced exhaustion.”

“Precisely,” Vance nodded. “She systematically emptied Clara’s personal trust accounts, transferred your corporate holdings into joint accounts under her exclusive control, and established a legal declaration of death using a manipulated dental record and a bribed local coroner who retired to the Cayman Islands four years ago.”

The door to the library clicked open.

Two uniformed officers escorted Vanessa into the room. She was no longer wearing her designer silk dress; instead, she had been forced into a simple gray woolen sweater and jeans, her hands cuffed securely behind her back. The haughty, untouchable socialite was entirely gone, replaced by a desperate, sweating woman realizing the walls were finally closing in for good.

“Daniel!” Vanessa cried out, attempting to rush toward him, but the officers held her firmly by the arms. “You can’t let them do this! We built an empire together! Think of our life! Think of the company!”

Daniel slowly turned around. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't gesture wildly. He simply looked at her the way an engineer looks at a load-bearing column riddled with terminal rot.

“We didn't build anything, Vanessa,” Daniel said quietly. “You squatted on my life while keeping my wife buried alive in a concrete box.”

“She was insane!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking into pure hysteria. “She would have ruined everything! You loved me! You told me you loved me!”

“I loved the woman I thought you were,” Daniel replied, his tone devoid of all warmth. “A woman who cared for my daughter, who stood by me when I was vulnerable. But you were nothing more than a parasite wearing another woman’s skin.”

Detective Vance stepped between them, gesturing to the officers. “Take her down to the precinct. Book her on charges of kidnapping, false imprisonment, aggravated assault, fraud, identity theft, and attempted murder.”

“You can’t do this! I have rights! My lawyers will tear you apart!” Vanessa screamed as the officers hauled her backward toward the double doors, her desperate cries echoing down the marble hallway until the heavy oak doors finally shut, sealing her fate.

The library fell silent once more.

Vance looked at Daniel, slipping a final evidence bag containing Vanessa’s personal phone into his coat pocket. “It’s going to take months to untangle all the financial fraud, Mr. Blackwood. But your wife is safe. The nightmare is over.”

“Is it?” Daniel murmured, looking out the tall gothic window toward the dark, crashing waves of the North Sea. “For Clara... the nightmare is only just beginning to heal.”
