Chapter 8 - The Final Verdict

The jury deliberated for less than three hours.
When the buzzer sounded, signaling a unanimous verdict, the courtroom doors swung open, and the press corps flooded back into their seats.
Judge Alistair Vance adjusted his glasses, looking down at the heavy stack of legal documents before him.
“On all counts of aggravated kidnapping, conspiracy to commit murder, systemic wire fraud, identity theft, and elder and domestic financial exploitation,” the judge announced, his voice ringing with absolute authority, “this court finds the defendant, Vanessa Blackwood, guilty as charged on every single indictment.”
Vanessa stared straight ahead, her face draining of all remaining color as the reality of her life sentence without the possibility of parole finally crashed down upon her.
“There is a profound difference between ambition and pure malice,” Judge Sterling continued, his eyes fixed on the defense table. “You stole a woman’s life, a mother’s years, and a child’s birthright out of pure, insatiable greed. The law demands a reckoning. You are hereby sentenced to life imprisonment at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary, with a minimum mandatory service of thirty years before any petition for parole can even be considered.”
The heavy gavel came down with a final, echoing crack.
Bang.
Two federal marshals stepped up behind Vanessa, clicking cold steel handcuffs around her wrists. As she was hoisted to her feet, she let out one final, feral shriek, attempting to lunge toward the gallery, before the marshals firmly guided her through the secure side door.
The trial was over. The empire built on sand had collapsed into dust.
As Daniel and Clara walked out of the courthouse steps into the bright Edinburgh afternoon sun, a gentle spring breeze caught Clara’s hair.
Daniel pulled her close, resting his cheek against hers.

“It’s really over,” Daniel whispered.
“No, Daniel,” Clara smiled, looking toward a black car waiting to take them home to their daughter. “It’s just beginning.”
