Chapter 10 - The Clear Horizon

The sun was setting over the river, casting a warm, golden glow across the glass-fronted balcony of Jennifer’s new home—a bright, airy townhouse overlooking the marina on the north side of the city.
There were no grand ballrooms, no rented tuxedos, and no performance for an audience of corporate superiors.
Jennifer stood on the balcony, leaning against the polished metal railing with a mug of herbal tea in her hands. Inside the living room, nine-month-old Lily was crawling across the plush area rug, chasing a rolling toy with squeals of delighted laughter, watched over by Jennifer’s mother, who was visiting for the weekend.
The wind caught Jennifer’s hair, blowing a dark strand across her cheek. She tucked it behind her ear, taking a deep, unhurried breath of the crisp evening air.
The past year felt like a lifetime ago—a turbulent storm that had threatened to tear her world apart, but had instead swept away everything false, hollow, and rotten. What remained was solid, authentic, and entirely her own.

She looked down at her wrist, then out at the wide, open expanse of the river where boats drifted peacefully toward the horizon under a sky turning from gold to deep, luminous indigo.
She didn't need a script, she didn't need a second life, and she certainly didn't need anyone else to pay her way. For the first time in her life, the ledger was balanced, the accounts were clear, and the road ahead stretched out wide, beautiful, and completely unclouded.
