Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

The room was so quiet now that the distant hum of traffic far below the glass-fronted terrace sounded like a distant tide.

Robert, Daniel’s father, picked up the second page—the chat logs where Daniel had discussed how to handle "that side of things" regarding Jennifer’s pregnancy. The older man’s hand shook violently. He looked at his son, his face turning a deep, congested shade of crimson.

“Did you do this?” Robert demanded, his voice cracking with a mixture of fury and profound humiliation. “Did you take money from your own home—from your pregnant wife—to support another woman?”

Daniel couldn't speak. His mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water, his eyes darting frantically around the table, seeking an ally, a loophole, an exit strategy. But there was none. The Grand Horizon ballroom, which he had rented at such great expense to project his success to the world, had become an airtight glass box of his own construction.

“You looked me in the eye this morning,” Jennifer said, her voice cutting through the silence with terrifying clarity. “You stood up in front of fifty people, thanked me for giving you the greatest gift of your life, and played the devoted husband while your mistress was probably texting you congratulations from across town.”

She stood up slowly, her red dress catching the light, framing her posture with an absolute, unyielding dignity. She reached down, lifted the sleeping infant in her carrier with one hand, and picked up her leather handbag with the other.

“As for the bill,” Jennifer added, looking down at the embossed leather folder sitting beside the manila stack, “you pay it, Daniel. It’s not my child’s party after all—not in any way that truly matters.”

With that, she turned her back on the head table and began walking down the central aisle toward the grand double doors of the terrace ballroom.

The guests parted before her like water, the whispers rising into a low, buzzing wave of astonishment as the reality of the scene sank in. Eleanor covered her face with her hands, letting out a sharp, choked sob of mortification. Arthur Sterling stood up, picked up his leather portfolio, and walked past Daniel without a single word, heading straight for the exit.

Daniel remained frozen in his chair, his hands gripping the edge of the table so tightly his knuckles turned chalk white, staring after the red silhouette of the woman he had tried to manage out of his life.
