Chapter 3 - The Gold Coast ClinicWhile our flight was climbing steadily through the thick cloud layer over Lake Michigan, climbing toward thirty-five thousand feet, another scene was unfolding forty miles away in an ultra-exclusive private obstetric clinic nestled in Chicago’s prestigious Gold Coast neighborhood.

The waiting room of the Institute for Maternal Health looked more like a five-star boutique hotel than a medical facility. The walls were adorned with original abstract paintings, plush velvet armchairs invited quiet contemplation, and soft, ambient classical music drifted from hidden ceiling speakers.
Sitting in a semi-circle near the private consultation entrance were seven people.
The entire Hale family had assembled.
At the center of attention sat Brielle Foster, radiant in an cream-colored cashmere sweater dress that hugged her carefully curated baby bump. She was sipping sparkling mineral water from a crystal glass, her long blonde hair cascading over her shoulders in flawless waves.
Beside her sat Preston, beaming with the unbearable, puffed-up pride of a man who believed he had just engineered the ultimate dynastic victory. He had his arm draped affectionately over the back of Brielle’s chair, occasionally leaning over to whisper something that made her giggle behind manicured fingers.
Directly across from them sat Preston’s parents, Arthur and Eleanor Hale.
Arthur, a retired senior partner at a prominent corporate law firm, sat with his legs crossed, tapping a gold-plated fountain pen against his knee, looking every bit the patriarch of an old-money Chicago family. Eleanor wore a tailored St. John knit suit, her pearls glowing under the recessed lighting, a look of profound, aristocratic satisfaction etched into her lined face.
Flanking them were Preston’s two sisters, Clarissa and Julianne, along with their respective husbands—corporate executives who traveled in the same rarefied social circles as the Hales.
All seven members of the Hale dynasty had gathered under one roof, buzzing with palpable excitement. For months, they had treated Brielle’s pregnancy like a sacred royal event. To the Hales, family wasn't just a matter of affection; it was a corporation, a bloodline, a fortress of wealth and status that required a male heir to inherit the vast real estate holdings, trust funds, and corporate shares accumulated over three generations.
“I still can’t believe Lena had the audacity to make such a fuss about the settlement this morning,” Eleanor muttered, adjusting her pearl necklace as she glared at her husband. “After everything Preston provided for her—living in Winnetka, driving a luxury SUV, never having to work a real day in her life—she actually had the nerve to drag out the mediation.”
“Well, mother, women of her background often struggle to accept when they’ve been outgrown,” Arthur remarked smoothly, staring down at his watch. “Lena was a pleasant enough girl for a while, but she simply lacked the pedigree required to carry the Hale name into the next generation. Brielle comes from good stock. Her father’s brokerage firm merging with our holdings is going to solidify our market dominance for the next decade.”
“And a boy, Preston!” Clarissa chimed in, leaning forward with a bright, predatory smile. “A literal heir! Father’s trust fund stipulations are finally going to be satisfied without any legal loopholes.”
Preston puffed out his chest, basking in the warm glow of familial validation—a feeling he had craved his entire life. “The private genetic screening yesterday confirmed it beyond a shadow of a doubt, guys. One hundred percent male. Strong heartbeat, perfect vitals. The doctor said he’s already measuring a week ahead of schedule.”
“A true Hale,” Eleanor sighed happily, dabbing the corner of her eye with a pristine linen handkerchief that actually shed real tears of joy. “Our family name is secure.”
At that exact moment, the heavy mahogany door of the private consultation suite swung open, and a nurse in crisp white scrubs stepped out into the waiting room, holding a digital tablet against her chest.
“Brielle Foster?” the nurse called out, smiling warmly. “Dr. Sterling is ready for you now. And the entire family is welcome back for the high-definition ultrasound scan.”

The room erupted into quiet, triumphant energy.
Preston stood up first, extending his hand to help Brielle to her feet like a knight assisting a queen. The seven members of the Hale family rose in unison, trailing behind them like a royal entourage entering a cathedral, eager to witness the official christening of their future dynasty.
