Chapter 5 - The Genetic TrapThe question hung in the air of the examination room like a physical blow.

For several seconds, nobody breathed. The soft classical music playing from the ceiling speakers suddenly sounded loud and inappropriate, like cheerful background noise at a funeral.
Preston opened his mouth, but no sound came out. His face, which had been flushed with arrogant triumph just moments before, turned a sickly, pasty shade of gray.
“Paternal... paternal DNA matching?” Preston repeated, his voice dropping an octave as panic rapidly displaced his confusion. “What on earth are you talking about, Doctor? Why would we need a DNA match? It’s my child—our child. Brielle and I have been exclusive for over a year!”
Brielle let out a sharp, breathless gasp, pressing her hands against her mouth as tears welled up in her eyes. “Preston, don’t you dare listen to her! She’s... she’s making a mistake! Look at the screen, it’s a glitch! Ultrasounds glitch all the time!”
Dr. Sterling didn't raise her voice. She remained entirely composed, her professional detachment acting as an unyielding shield against the rising tide of hysteria in the room.
She tapped the keyboard once more, bringing up a detailed PDF document from the Elite Genetics Lab portal, projecting the laboratory summary directly onto the auxiliary monitor.
“Medical technology does not lie, Ms. Foster,” Dr. Sterling said evenly, scrolling down to the bottom of the lab report where the biometric verification metrics were displayed in bold black text. “When a high-end chromosomal panel is run, it doesn't just look at X and Y chromosomes to determine gender. It sequences the entire cell-free fetal DNA profile to screen for genetic anomalies, paternal lineage, and zygosity in multiple pregnancies.”
She pointed a manicured finger at a highlighted line on the screen.
“As you can see right here,” Dr. Sterling continued, “this is a twin gestation. Specifically, dichorionic diamniotic twins—two separate eggs fertilized independently. Which, biologically speaking, is entirely normal. However...”
She paused, letting the silence build before delivering the finishing blow.
“However, genetic sequencing indicates that while one fetus matches the maternal DNA profile, the paternal markers for the two fetuses do not match the same biological father.”
The room erupted.
“THAT IS ABSURD!” Arthur Hale roared, slamming his heavy gold-headed cane against the marble floor with a force that made the medical instruments rattle on their trays. “Do you have any idea who you are talking to, woman? We are the Hale family! You are sitting here accusing my future daughter-in-law of scandalous filth based on some computer glitch in your glorified television screen!”
Eleanor burst into frantic, ugly tears, clutching her chest as her daughters rushed to comfort her, shouting over one another in a chaotic chorus of denial and rage.
“Brielle, tell them she’s lying!” Clarissa shrieked, pointing an accusing finger at the pale, trembling woman on the examination table. “Tell them this is a sick joke!”
Brielle couldn't speak. She was shaking so violently that her teeth were visibly chattering. She stared at the dual-pane ultrasound monitor as if it were a ghost, her chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow gasps. Her silence was louder than any denial could ever be.
Preston slowly turned his head to look at Brielle. The confident, puffed-up CEO was entirely gone, replaced by a man whose entire reality was violently imploding in real-time.
“Brielle...” Preston whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of terror and white-hot fury. “Look at me. Tell me what she’s saying isn't true.”
Brielle couldn't meet his eyes. She squeezed her own shut, a sob tearing its way out of her throat. “Preston... please... it’s not what you think... I can explain—”
“Explain what?!” Preston screamed, losing all semblance of composure as he lunged forward, grabbing the edge of the examination table. “Explain how a twin pregnancy can have two different fathers?! Explain how you were sleeping with someone else while I was fighting my wife in court to make room for you?!”
The realization hit the rest of the Hale family like a physical tidal wave.
Arthur’s face turned from gray to a dangerous, apoplectic purple. He grabbed his wife’s arm, pulling her backward toward the exit. “This is a catastrophe. An absolute, unmitigated disgrace! Come along, Eleanor, we are leaving this house of absolute filth immediately!”
“Wait! Arthur, look at the baby—look at our grandson!” Eleanor wailed, her aristocratic composure completely shattered as she was dragged out of the room by her husband and daughters, who slammed the heavy mahogany door behind them with a resounding crash.
Within thirty seconds, the grand, seven-member entourage of the Hale dynasty had vanished, leaving Preston standing alone in the sterile examination room with a weeping, exposed mistress and a doctor whose expression remained as cold and clinical as a surgeon’s scalpel.
Preston stared at Brielle, his hands curled into tight fists at his sides, trembling so violently that the veins in his neck stood out like thick cords.
He had traded a loyal wife who loved him, shattered his eleven-year marriage, abandoned his two innocent daughters, and destroyed his entire social standing—all for a woman who had apparently been entertaining multiple partners behind his back while he played the arrogant patriarch.
Dr. Sterling clicked off the ultrasound machine, letting the massive wall screen fade to black. She stood up, smoothing down her lab coat.

“I’ll leave you two to discuss your family planning,” Dr. Sterling said quietly, walking past Preston toward the doorway. “Front desk will have your medical file ready on your way out.”
The heavy door clicked shut behind her, leaving Preston and Brielle trapped in a suffocating, echoing silence.
