Chapter 4 - The Vault of Secrets

The private office inside the Moretti shipping terminal bore no resemblance to a corporate boardroom. It was a subterranean fortress reinforced with steel plating, thick mahogany bookshelves, and rows of digital monitors streaming live security feeds from every corner of the port.

When Lorenzo pushed open the heavy steel door, the room was already occupied.

Sitting rigidly in a leather chair near the center of the room was Celeste Vane. Her hands were bound behind her back with industrial zip ties, and a strip of silver duct tape was plastered firmly across her mouth. Her hair was disheveled, her makeup smeared with dried tears, and her eyes bulged with primal, unadulterated terror as Lorenzo walked in.

Behind her stood two armed guards, their tactical vests dark against the stark white walls.

Evelyn walked in right behind Lorenzo, her boots echoing sharply against the concrete floor. She stopped a few feet away from Celeste, looking down at the woman who had spent months playing the role of society royalty while plotting mass murder.

Lorenzo walked over to his desk, tossed his car keys onto the blotter, and gestured to Bruno.

“Take the tape off,” Lorenzo commanded.

Bruno stepped forward and ripped the duct tape away in one fast, violent motion.

Celeste gasped, letting out a ragged, high-pitched scream. “Lorenzo! You’re insane! You can't do this! My father—the entire Vane syndicate will hunt you down to the ends of the earth! You’re starting a war!”

“The war started the moment you planted C4 beneath my restaurant, Celeste,” Lorenzo replied calmly. He pulled out a leather cigar case, snipped the end of a thick Cuban cigar, and lit it with a heavy brass lighter. A plume of blue smoke drifted toward the high ceiling. “And as for your father... he’s already packing his bags.”

Celeste’s eyes widened in horror. “What are you talking about?”

From the corner of the room, a hidden wall panel slid open with a pneumatic hiss. Step-by-step, two guards escorted an older, silver-haired man into the room—Arthur Vane, patriarch of the old-money Chicago syndicate, looking remarkably pale and frantic as he was shoved forward into a chair.

Arthur’s eyes darted around the room until they landed on his daughter. “Celeste? Thank God—they grabbed me from my study, they—'”

“Shut your mouth, Arthur,” Lorenzo interrupted, blowing a ring of smoke toward the ceiling. He turned his gaze toward Evelyn, nodding slightly. “Evelyn. The floor is yours.”

Evelyn stepped out from the shadows of the desk, walking slowly toward the center of the room until she stood directly between the two bound members of the Vane family.

Arthur Vane blinked, squinting through his expensive wire-rimmed glasses at the young woman standing before him. For a second, recognition flickered in his fading eyes.

“Vance?” Arthur muttered, his voice trembling. “Arthur’s... Arthur’s daughter? But you were supposed to be out of state, your assets frozen—”

“You thought you wiped us out completely, didn't you, Mr. Vane?” Evelyn’s voice was ice-cold, cutting through the sterile room like a scalpel. “You thought my father dying of a broken heart meant you could steal his life’s work, forge his signature, and hand the shipping titles over to your daughter as a wedding gift.”

“We made a business arrangement!” Arthur sputtered, his face turning a blotchy red. “The shipping lanes were failing! Arthur couldn't handle the union strikes! It was just a buyout!”

“It wasn't a buyout,” Evelyn said, stepping closer, her voice rising with suppressed fury. “It was a robbery. And tonight, every single record, every bribe ledger, and every wire transfer proving how the Vane family laundered drug money through Moretti Logistics has been copied, encrypted, and automatically scheduled to drop into the inbox of the U.S. Attorney General and every major news outlet in the country if my heart stops beating for more than twelve hours.”

Arthur went completely gray. He looked frantically at Lorenzo. “Lorenzo, you can't believe her! She’s an outsider! She’s playing you!”

Lorenzo took a slow drag from his cigar, his dark eyes fixed on the trembling patriarch.

“She isn't playing me, Arthur,” Lorenzo said quietly. “She’s the only person in this room with more integrity than either of us.”

Lorenzo stood up from his desk, walking slowly toward the terrified father and daughter.

“Bruno,” Lorenzo called out.

“Boss?”

“Take Arthur and Celeste down to Pier 4. Put them on the midnight cargo freighter bound for South America. Strip them of their accounts, their names, and every last dollar of their generational wealth.” Lorenzo paused, a cold, predatory grin touching his lips. “Let them see what it feels like to start over with nothing in the dirt.”
