Chapter 2 - The Archive of Shadows

The local precinct smelled of cheap industrial floor wax and stale coffee. It was four in the morning. Lily had finally fallen asleep in the car seat beside my chair, her small chest rising and falling in rhythmic peace, unaware of how close she had come to annihilation.

A female detective named Vance sat opposite me, sliding a lukewarm cup of tea across the laminate desk. Her face was set in grim lines.

“Harold Vance is at the county hospital under armed guard,” she said without preamble. “The spinal contusion is severe. He won’t be walking again anytime soon, let alone holding a weapon. He’s being charged with attempted aggravated homicide, child abuse, and kidnapping.”

“And Michael?” My voice felt raw.

“Michael is thirty-four years old,” Detective Vance answered softly. “According to municipal records, Michael Vance died of scarlet fever at age nine. A death certificate was filed by an attending physician who lost his medical license two decades ago for running an illegal prescription mill. Michael never died. Harold simply erased him from the world.”

The door opened, and an officer brought in the evidence boxes seized from the house. Three oversized plastic containers filled with journals, ledgers, and hundreds of photographs spanning nearly forty years.

Detective Vance opened the top file and laid out the contents. My stomach churned.

Harold had not merely kept Michael captive; he had kept him as a living specimen. The photographs documented every year of Michael's youth. Black circles inked onto his skin. Rulers held up against his face. Notations tracking the temperature of his skin during fevers, astrological charts, and transcriptions of religious texts warped into violent dogma.

“Harold was convinced,” Vance explained, “that the vascular birthmark in their family line was a mark of spiritual corruption—a ‘stigma’ that invited madness unless it was purged through physical trauma. When Michael survived the illnesses Harold subjected him to, Harold believed the mark had absorbed the poison, turning Michael into something untouchable. So he hid him away to protect Daniel, whom he viewed as ‘unmarked.’”

“Until Lily,” I whispered, tears finally breaking past my eyelids.

“Until Lily,” Vance agreed. “Harold believed the lineage had skipped Daniel and resurfaced in your daughter. And he was determined to ‘test’ her before she could corrupt the household.”

I stared at the paperwork, horror giving way to an icy, crystallizing fury. “Daniel told me he didn't know Michael was alive.”

Vance didn't answer right away. She merely looked at the closed door of the adjacent interrogation room, where Daniel was being questioned.
