Chapter 9 - The Garden of Renewal

By autumn, our world had found a new, resilient equilibrium.
Michael’s recovery continued to defy expectations. He had moved into a semi-independent cottage on the grounds of the residential care facility. He earned a small wage tending to the institutional gardens and had even begun teaching basic plant propagation to other residents.
One Saturday morning, the family gathered at Michael’s cottage.
Daniel was there, having completed six months of consistent, loving, and humble visitation with Lily. The brothers sat together on the wooden bench outside the cottage, their shoulders touching. There was much they could never undo, but in the quiet warmth of the afternoon, they spoke of their mother, sharing childhood memories that had been suppressed beneath decades of terror.
Lily toddled across the lawn, clutching a plastic watering can. She reached Michael, tugging at the hem of his denim trousers.
“Unca Mike!” she babied, pointing her watering can at his boots.
Michael looked down, his face lighting up with a gentle, radiant smile. He crouched down, meeting her at eye level.
He didn't hide his cheek anymore. The scars and the birthmark were bare in the golden sunlight. Lily reached out with her small, chubby hand and patted his cheek, right over the red mark.
“Pretty,” she bababbled.
Michael’s eyes shone with profound emotion. He gently tapped Lily’s cheek in return, right on the matching red patch. “Pretty,” he agreed softly. “Just like the flowers.”

I stood by the porch rail, watching them, feeling a profound sense of release wash over my spirit. The terror that had haunted this family for three generations had finally been broken. The curse was nothing more than an old man's madness, dissolved in the bright light of courage, truth, and love.
