Chapter 6 - Voices From the Dark

An armored BearCat vehicle belonging to the Federal Bureau of Investigation sat squarely in the middle of the crushed wrought-iron entryway, its hydraulic battering ram resting atop the splintered remains of the Ferguson crest.
Behind it stretched a convoy of four black Suburbans and two military police transport vans.
Dozens of federal agents in tactical vests bearing the yellow letters **FBI** and **CID** were pouring across the manicured zoysia grass, their rifles held at the ready, securing the perimeter with surgical, terrifying efficiency.
Stepping through the shattered entryway, flanked by Special Agent Torres and Master Sergeant Vance, was Colonel Rachel Gardner.
I had swapped my dress uniform for field operational fatigues—crisp camouflage, black combat boots, and the command rank insignia pinned to my chest.
In my right hand, I held a blue document folder bearing the crimson wax seal of the United States District Court for the Western District of North Carolina.
Gregory Ferguson leaned over the balcony railing, his face contorted in an explosion of aristocratic outrage. "What is the meaning of this?! This is private property! You broke down my gate! I will have every single one of you arrested! Do you hear me?!"
Agent Torres raised a tactical megaphone to his mouth.
"Gregory Ferguson! Nicholas Ferguson! Patricia Ferguson! We are in possession of a federal search and seizure warrant issued under the authority of the United States District Court for the Western District of North Carolina, signed by Senior Judge Marcus Thorne! Step down to the foyer with your hands visible, or we will breach the front entrance!"
Nicholas grabbed his mother's arm, his face completely devoid of color. "Mother... they have a federal warrant. Thorne signed it. Thorne is untouchable!"
"Shut up!" Patricia hissed, though her pearls shook against her trembling throat. "Gregory, call Senator Bradley! Call him right now!"
"Bradley can't stop an active federal warrant execution, Mother," Gregory said, the first notes of genuine terror creeping into his voice. "If they're here... they already presented grand jury indictments."
Down below, I raised my hand.
Master Sergeant Vance nodded. He signaled the breach team.
Two federal agents stepped up to the massive carved mahogany front doors of the mansion with a hydraulic ram. With two concussive thuds that rattled the leaded glass windows, the heavy doors split down the center and burst inward.
"Federal agents! Move, move, move!"
The boots of twenty armed operators thundered into the grand marble foyer.
I walked into the house with calm, measured steps.
The Ferguson mansion was a temple to stolen wealth. Gilded mirrors reached toward twelve-foot ceilings. Crystal chandeliers cast fractured light across imported Italian marble. Oil paintings of landscapes Abigail could have painted with ten times the soul hung in heavy gold frames.
Patricia, Gregory, and Nicholas came down the sweeping spiral staircase, their descent looking less like an aristocratic entrance and more like three condemned prisoners being marched to a scaffold.
Nicholas was weeping openly now. "Rachel... please. Talk to me. We're family. Think of Abigail. She wouldn't want this! She loves me!"
I stopped at the bottom of the stairs, looking up at the man who had dragged my daughter across a floor by her hair.
"My daughter," I said, each word falling like an iron weight, "is currently undergoing a three-hour forensic examination to document the fractures in her ribs and the ligature marks on her wrists."
Nicholas stumbled on the bottom step, falling to his knees on the marble floor. "I didn't mean to hurt her! She made me mad! She threatened to tell people about the shell accounts! She was going to ruin us!"
"Nicholas, shut your pathetic mouth!" Patricia shrieked, descending the stairs behind him, her eyes wide with unhinged malice. She pointed a manicured, trembling finger directly at my face. "You think you've won, you military peasant? You think you can tear down three generations of Ferguson heritage? My great-grandfather built this city! We own the banks! We own the land you're standing on!"
"You don't own this land anymore, Patricia," Agent Torres said, stepping forward with a sheaf of seizure documents. "As of 0600 hours, the United States Department of the Treasury has frozen all domestic and international assets associated with Ferguson Global Capital, Ferguson Infrastructure, and twenty-two subsidiary shell entities under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act."
Torres looked at Gregory, whose face had frozen into a mask of pure shock.
"Gregory Ferguson, you are under arrest for federal procurement fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to defraud the United States government, and aggravated identity theft."
Two FBI agents stepped behind Gregory, twisted his arms behind his back with practiced brutality, and snapped heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
The gold Rolex glinted against the cold steel of the cuffs.
"Get your hands off me!" Gregory snarled, struggling against the agents. "Pemberton! Where is Pemberton?!"
"Arthur Pemberton was arrested thirty minutes ago at his law office," Captain Ward announced, entering through the shattered doorway. "He’s currently being booked for suborning perjury and acting as an unindicted co-conspirator in a money-laundering enterprise."
I walked over to Nicholas, who was still huddled on the marble floor, his designer suit bunched up around his knees.
I knelt down until my eyes were level with his.
"You told my daughter," I whispered, "that nobody would believe an artist over an investment banker."
Nicholas couldn't meet my gaze. He buried his face in his hands, his whole body trembling in the exact same way Abigail had trembled in that hospital room.
"Look at me, Nicholas," I commanded.
Slowly, whimpering, he raised his tear-streaked face.
"An artist creates truth," I told him. "A banker like you creates illusions. And illusions burn down very, very quickly when the wind changes."
I stood up and turned to Master Sergeant Vance. "Where is the carriage house?"
"Through the rear courtyard, ma'am. CID tech team is already securing the study."

"Let's go get Abigail's life back."
