Chapter 8 - The Hammer of Justice Falls

By midday, the Ferguson dynasty was disintegrating on live television.
Every major news outlet in North Carolina—and across the nation—had scrapped their scheduled programming. The footage of FBI and Military Police convoys smashing through the gilded gates of the Myers Park estate had gone viral across the globe within minutes.
On CNN, a banner read: **MASSIVE DEFENSE FRAUD RING BUSTED IN NORTH CAROLINA: PROMINENT BILLIONAIRE DYNASTY INDICTED.**
On the local Charlotte affiliate, an aerial helicopter feed showed Patricia Ferguson being led down the stone front steps of her mansion in handcuffs.
Her platinum hair was disheveled. Her pearl necklace had been confiscated as personal property. For the first time in her seventy-one years of life, Patricia Ferguson was being pushed into the back of an unmarked federal transport van by two female FBI agents who did not care who her grandfather was.
Behind her, Nicholas was sobbing into his hands, his knees buckling so severely that two agents had to literally carry him across the gravel driveway.
In the corporate offices of Ferguson Holdings in downtown Charlotte, dozens of IRS Criminal Investigation agents were wheeling out handcarts filled with servers, filing cabinets, and hard drives.
At St. Bernard Hospital, federal marshals were seen escorting Dr. Harrison out through the main lobby in broad daylight, his medical coat stripped from his shoulders.
And at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse, Judge Vance Reynolds abruptly resigned from the bench "due to health reasons," thirty minutes before federal prosecutors unsealed an indictment charging him with accepting bribes and judicial misconduct.
The network of corruption that had strangled the region for decades had not merely cracked.

It had been pulverized beneath the coordinated weight of federal law and military precision.
