Chapter 9 - The Verdict and the New Horizon
By late November, the federal trial of United States v. Austin Wellman and Amanda Wellman concluded after a swift, three-week proceeding.
The jury deliberated for less than four hours before returning unanimous guilty verdicts on all twenty-four counts of federal healthcare fraud, conspiracy, wire embezzlement, and obstruction of justice.
Judge Sterling didn't hesitate during sentencing.
“You weaponized institutional trust, corporate privilege, and maternal loyalty to execute a sophisticated criminal enterprise that preyed upon the most vulnerable sectors of public health,” Judge Sterling stated sternly from the bench. “Mr. Wellman, you are sentenced to twenty-five years in federal prison without parole. Mrs. Wellman, as the primary coordinator of the investor recruitment network, you are sentenced to twenty years.”
The gavel came down for the final time.
The Wellman family empire—built on lies, favoritism, financial crimes, and broken bones—was officially dissolved into history.
Two months later, I stood on the open-air observation deck of the Mercy Health Network administrative building, looking out over the glittering skyline of San Diego under a brilliant, cloudless winter sun.
I was promoted to Vice President of Corporate Compliance and Financial Integrity, tasked with redesigning the hospital network’s entire internal auditing framework to ensure that no unauthorized administrative backdoors could ever be opened again.
My office was quiet, organized, and filled with bright natural light.
My phone buzzed on the mahogany desk. I picked it up and saw a text message from Evelyn Vance, now head of internal hospital security.
“Auditing committee meeting in ten minutes, boss. Bring your red pen.”
