Chapter 3 - The Morning After

The luxury suite on the top floor of the St. Anthony Hotel was bathed in the pale, amber light of dawn. Outside, the Dallas skyline rose grandly through the thinning morning drizzle, but inside Penthouse Suite 1204, the atmosphere was thick with the suffocating scent of expensive champagne, leftover floral arrangements, and unearned triumph.
Javier Robles sat comfortably at the glass mahogany dining table, wearing a crisp silk bathrobe, nursing a cup of artisanal espresso. Across from him sat his mother, Carmen, draped in a silk designer housecoat, diamond earrings already sparkling against her lobes even at 7:30 in the morning.
She was scrolling through her tablet with a look of supreme, haughty satisfaction.
“Did she text yet?” Carmen asked, not looking up from her screen.
Javier took a slow sip of his espresso, a self-satisfied smirk playing on his clean-shaven face.
“Not yet, Mom. But she’ll cave,” Javier said with absolute, casual arrogance. “She’s terrified, she’s isolated, and she’s alone in that little apartment of hers. By noon, she’ll be begging to sign the deed over just so we’ll stop calling her lawyers. You handled her brilliantly last night.”
Carmen chuckled, a dry, aristocratic sound.
“A stubborn horse always kicks at first, Javier. But once you break its spirit, it pulls the carriage right where you want it to go. That $1.8 million Uptown condo will be transferred into the family holding corporation by Tuesday afternoon. And then? We sell it, reinvest the capital into your firm’s partnership expansion, and your father’s legacy is secure.”
“Exactly,” Javier nodded, checking his gold wristwatch. “Besides, what’s she going to do? Call the police? Who’s going to believe a hysterical new bride over a rising corporate attorney and a respected family like ours? Her mother is a nobody living in a modest apartment. They have zero leverage.”
At that exact moment, the heavy double doors of the penthouse suite rattled violently.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Javier frowned, setting his espresso cup down. “Housekeeping is early. I put the Do Not Disturb sign on the handle.”
Before Javier could stand up to answer it, the heavy wooden door didn't just open—it was shoved inward with such explosive force that the brass deadbolt sheered straight out of the doorframe, splintering wood across the marble entryway.
Carmen shrieked, dropping her tablet onto the glass table.
Striding into the suite with unhurried, terrifying authority wasn't a hotel manager or a housekeeper.
It was Alexander Vance.
Flanking him on either side were four towering, suit-clad private security operatives with grim, impassive faces, followed closely by two uniformed Dallas Police detectives and a county sheriff’s deputy holding an official arrest warrant.
Javier scrambled backward out of his chair, his face instantly draining of all color, his espresso cup tipping over and spilling dark liquid across the white tablecloth.
“D-Dad?!” Javier stammered, his voice pitching upward in sheer panic as he looked at Alexander. Wait, no—Javier knew who Alexander was by reputation in legal and real estate circles, even though he had never met the man face-to-face. Seeing the formidable titan standing in his hotel suite sent a wave of icy terror straight through his spine. “Mr… Mr. Vance? What… what is the meaning of this? This is private property! How did you get in here?!”
Carmen recovered her composure slightly, standing up and drawing her silk robe tighter around her chest, trying to put on her best aristocratic glare.
“How dare you barge in here like common thugs!” Carmen shrieked, her voice shaking despite her attempt at bravado. “Do you know who we are?! My husband is Judge Robles’s close associate! We will have your licenses revoked, we will sue you into—!”
Alexander didn't even acknowledge Carmen’s existence. He walked across the marble floor with slow, measured steps, his dark eyes fixed entirely on Javier like a tiger stalking a wounded gazelle.
He didn't shout. He didn't make a scene.
He simply raised his right hand and delivered a backhanded slap across Javier’s face so hard, fast, and vicious that the young attorney spun completely around, crashing into the glass dining table, shattering plates and sending cutlery clattering everywhere.
Javier hit the floor, clutching his bleeding cheek, gasping for air, staring up at Alexander with eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated terror.
“You—!” Javier choked out, spitting blood onto the carpet.
“You touched my daughter,” Alexander said. His voice was barely a whisper, yet it echoed through the entire penthouse suite with the crushing weight of a falling boulder. “You watched your mother and her thugs beat my child forty times in a locked room, and you stood outside like a coward, worrying about whether her face would look too bruised for brunch.”
Carmen lunged forward, her face purple with rage. “You can’t touch my son! He is an attorney! He is a Robles! You’ll pay for this—”
“Shut up, woman,” one of the police detectives barked, stepping forward and flashing a silver badge right in Carmen’s face, reading off a legal document with crisp efficiency.
“Carmen Robles, you are under arrest for felony assault, conspiracy to commit extortion, unlawful imprisonment, and coercion under color of duress.”
Carmen staggered backward, her hands flying to her mouth. “Arrested?! You can’t arrest me! My husband—!”
“Your husband’s judicial connections won't save you today, Mrs. Robles,” the detective interrupted coldly, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around Carmen’s wrists with a definitive, metallic click. “Not when the District Attorney’s office personally reviewed the 4K unedited hotel security footage from Penthouse Suite 1204 twenty minutes ago, alongside forensic medical reports and a signed victim affidavit from Mrs. Sofia Vance-Robles.”
Javier, still sprawled on the floor among the broken glass and spilled coffee, looked up in horror as the second detective walked over to him, pulling out a matching pair of handcuffs.
“Javier Robles, you are also under arrest as an accessory to felony assault, coercion, and failure to render aid during a violent crime.”
“No! No, wait, there’s been a mistake!” Javier wailed, scrambling backward on his hands and knees like a trapped rat, desperately looking toward Alexander for mercy. “Mr. Vance! Please! It was a misunderstanding! It was just a family dispute! We’re married! Sofia is my wife!”
Alexander stopped walking. He looked down at the pathetic, whimpering lawyer crumpled on the floor at his feet, his expression filled with infinite, freezing disgust.
“She was your wife for exactly twelve hours,” Alexander said, his voice as cold as a tombstone. “By the time my legal team finishes with you on Monday morning, your name won't even be on her lease, let alone her property deed. And as for your law license?”
Alexander leaned down slightly, his dark eyes boring straight into Javier’s soul.
“By sunset today, every bar association in the state of Texas is going to receive a permanent disbarment petition with your name on it. You’ll never practice law in this country again. You’ll be lucky if you can find a job bagging groceries by the time we’re finished stripping every asset your family owns to pay for my daughter’s damages.”
The detectives hoisted Javier up by his arms, snapping the cuffs onto his wrists, and dragged him toward the shattered doorway alongside his mother, who was now weeping hysterically as her expensive diamond earrings scraped against the doorframe.
Alexander stood alone in the ruined suite for a long moment, adjusting his cuffs, breathing out a slow, steady breath.
Then, he pulled out his phone, dialed my number, and answered on the first ring.
“Elena,” he said softly.
May you like
“Is it done?” I asked from the other end of the line, sitting in my living room with Sofia resting peacefully against my shoulder.
“It’s done,” Alexander replied, a faint, grim ghost of a smile touching his lips. “The trash has been taken out. And our daughter is finally, permanently safe.”
