Chapter 7 - The Subpoena and the Serpent

The federal courthouse in downtown Dallas buzzed with the frantic energy of a media circus. Camera crews crowded the limestone steps, microphones thrust forward like hungry birds whenever a high-profile attorney or corporate witness stepped out of a black SUV.
Inside the cavernous third-floor courtroom, the air smelled of floor wax, old paper, and palpable tension.
Seated at the defense table were Carmen Robles and her legal counsel—a high-priced defense attorney flown in specifically from New York, sweating profusely under the courtroom lights despite the crisp air conditioning. Carmen no longer wore her expensive diamond earrings or her haughty, untouchable smirk. Her face was tight, her skin pale, and her eyes darted nervously toward the gallery where reporters and financial analysts scribbled furiously in their legal pads.
Javier sat beside her in a drab orange county jumpsuit, his wrists cuffed to a waist chain. The polished corporate attorney who had once looked down on the world from the heights of a luxury European sedan was completely gone, replaced by a hollow, broken man with sunken cheeks and dull, lifeless eyes.
At the prosecution table sat Alexander’s hand-picked lead counsel, coordinating with federal prosecutors who had spent the last three months unearthing a staggering web of financial fraud, witness intimidation, and corporate extortion tied directly to the Robles family holding corporation.
The heavy oak doors at the back of the courtroom swung open, and a hush fell over the room as Sofia walked in.
She wasn't hiding behind oversized sunglasses or ducking away from the flashbulbs. She wore a sharp, elegant navy blue suit, her head held high, walking with the steady, measured stride of someone stepping onto a parade ground. I walked right beside her, my hand linked securely through her arm, while Alexander flanked her other side like a stone wall.
As Sofia took her seat in the front row of the gallery, Carmen turned her head. Their eyes locked across the courtroom.
For a split second, Carmen’s face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom—the desperate fury of an aristocrat realizing her throne had been smashed to pieces.
Sofia didn't flinch. She didn't look away. She simply stared back at her former mother-in-law with a cold, absolute calm that made Carmen physically recoil in her seat.
“All rise for the Honorable Judge Thomas H. Vance presiding,” the bailiff’s voice rang out.
The federal judge—no relation to Alexander, though cut from the exact same cloth of uncompromising judicial integrity—stepped up onto the bench, adjusting his glasses as he surveyed the courtroom.
“Be seated,” the judge commanded. He looked down at the stacked dockets before him. “We are here for the omnibus pretrial hearings in United States v. Robles et al. The prosecution has filed emergency motions for asset freezing, witness protection enforcement, and the admissibility of multi-state wiretap evidence.”
For the next two hours, the courtroom transformed into a masterclass in legal destruction.
Alexander’s team systematically dismantled every single defense motion filed by Carmen’s high-priced lawyers. They presented unedited financial ledgers proving that Carmen had systematically embezzled funds from charitable trusts to finance her family's lavish lifestyle, alongside ironclad text message records of Javier coordinating the cover-up of the wedding night assault.
When the New York defense attorney stood up to object, stammering about “family privacy” and “exaggerated civil claims,” federal prosecutors simply dropped a thick stack of certified bank statements onto the record—showing that Carmen had attempted to transfer millions of dollars into offshore shell companies just forty-eight hours after the wedding night attack in a desperate bid to hide assets from Sofia’s civil forfeiture lawsuit.
Judge Vernon listened quietly, his expression hardening with every piece of evidence presented.
Finally, the judge tapped his gavel once.
“Motion to dismiss all counts is categorically denied,” Judge Vernon ruled, his voice echoing sharply through the silent courtroom. “Furthermore, given the documented attempts by the defendants to intimidate witnesses and liquidate corporate assets in defiance of civil injunctions, all bail is formally revoked. The defendants will be remanded to federal custody pending trial.”
A collective gasp sucked the air right out of the courtroom.
Carmen let out a shrill, choked cry, clutching at her defense attorney’s sleeve as two federal marshals stepped forward, clicking heavy steel cuffs around her wrists.
Javier slumped forward in his chair, his head dropping into his cuffed hands as the marshals hauled him to his feet.
As Carmen was dragged past the gallery doors, her eyes locked onto Sofia one last time.
“You won't get away with this!” Carmen shrieked, struggling against the marshals. “We made you! You’re nothing without us!”

Sofia didn't blink. She looked down at her former mother-in-law with quiet, devastating pity.
“You never made me, Carmen,” Sofia said clearly, her voice cutting effortlessly through the courtroom chaos. “You just taught me how to fight back.”
