Chapter 5 - The Prison Beneath the Stone

The air that rushed out of the room tasted of ancient dust, damp earth, and the unmistakable, metallic tang of human suffering.

I flicked the wall switch. A dim, yellow incandescent bulb flickered to life overhead, casting long, bruised shadows across a space that looked less like a room and more like a medieval dungeon.

There were no windows. The walls were thick, impenetrable blocks of gray granite.

In the center of the concrete floor, a heavy iron-framed hospital bed had been bolted securely into the stone foundation. Leather restraints hung idly from the metal bedposts. An IV stand stood beside it, trailing empty plastic tubing that dripped slowly into a metal basin below.

A small plastic tray holding a bowl of cold broth and a cup of water sat on a wooden crate near the corner.

But it wasn't the furniture that made my knees buckle. It was the walls.

Every square inch of the gray granite plaster around the head of the bed was covered in frantic, jagged gouges, scratches, and handwritten messages carved deep into the stone by human fingernails.

I stepped slowly into the room, my boots crunching softly on the concrete dust. I reached out and touched the wall, tracing the lines of a message written in dark, dried blood.

If you're reading this... please don't believe your mother. She took my baby. She said I was never worthy of a Rossi. Dante... save our child.

My breath caught in my throat. A wave of suffocating nausea rolled over me, followed instantly by a rage so absolute, so primal and consuming, that it threatened to burn my internal organs to ash.

Grace had been here. For weeks. Locked away in the dark while I was thousands of miles away believing she had abandoned me.

And my mother had put her here.

Then...

May you like

From the deepest corner of the shadows behind the hospital bed, I heard a sound.

A soft, ragged, rattling breath.
