Chapter 5 - The Legal Exhumation

The drive back to my Beverly Hills-style estate in the upscale suburbs of Columbus was a blur of freezing rain, flashing wipers, and absolute, crystalline clarity.

By the time I pulled my BMW into the private garage, my hands weren't shaking anymore. The shock had completely burned away, leaving behind a cold, blinding focus.

I walked through the double front doors of the magnificent four-bedroom home—a house I had purchased with my own pre-marital capital, whose mortgage I paid off in full eighteen months ago—and walked straight into my private home office.

I sat down behind my mahogany executive desk, opened my laptop, and bypassed my standard workflow software, logging directly into my corporate attorney’s secure portal.

Within fifteen minutes, my finger was hovering over the dial button for Marcus Vance—no relation to the con artists, thankfully—the most ruthless, high-priced corporate and family law litigator in the entire state of Ohio.

It was 9:43 PM on Christmas night. Marcus answered on the second ring.

“Sarah? Is everything alright?” Marcus’s voice sounded sharp and alert, accustomed to emergency calls from high-net-worth clients.

“Marcus,” I said, my voice steady, cold, and razor-sharp. “I need you to initiate a comprehensive forensic audit of my personal and corporate accounts dating back twenty-four months. I also need to file an immediate petition for divorce, an emergency restraining order barring my husband from any corporate property or joint accounts, and a civil fraud suit against Michael Vance and his immediate family.”

There was a brief pause on the other end of the line, followed by the sound of a keyboard clicking.

“Did something happen tonight, Sarah?” Marcus asked carefully.

“Everything happened tonight, Marcus,” I replied, a cold smile touching the corners of my lips. “And I want every single dollar they fraudulently extracted from my companies and personal accounts tracked, itemized, and attached for immediate seizure.”

“Consider it done,” Marcus said, his tone shifting into one of lethal professionalism. “I’ll have my private investigator and senior accountant at your office by 8:00 AM tomorrow. Don't speak to Michael, don't sign anything, and if he steps foot on your property, call the county sheriff immediately.”

“He won't be stepping foot on my property,” I said softly, hanging up the phone.

Ten minutes later, I walked over to the smart-home master console on the hallway wall. With a few swift taps on the touchscreen, I overrode all secondary user access codes, permanently revoking Michael’s biometric fingerprint entry, his smartphone app control, and his garage door access.

As far as the house was concerned, Michael Vance no longer existed.
