Chapter 9 - The Cleansing Fire

By early spring, the legal proceedings were essentially a foregone conclusion.

Michael’s defense counsel tried every trick in the book to stall the divorce and contest the asset-freezing injunctions, but against Marcus Vance’s relentless forensic accounting and the undeniable paper trail of fraud, embezzlement, and premeditated deception, they didn't stand a single chance.

The final dissolution hearing took place in a sunlit courtroom downtown in late April.

Judge Robert Sterling—a federal jurist with zero tolerance for financial predators—presided over the bench. He didn't even bother listening to Michael’s rambling, pathetic excuses about “misunderstandings” and “marital stress.”

When Judge Sterling handed down the final ruling, it was a masterpiece of judicial execution:

The marriage was annulled on grounds of fraudulent inducement and bad-faith entrapment.

Every single luxury asset, vehicle, and cash transfer acquired by Michael and his family using corporate funds was ordered returned immediately through asset forfeiture liens.

Michael was barred permanently from approaching me, my corporate offices, or my property, with any violation resulting in immediate, unbailable incarceration.

As Michael was led out of the courtroom by his exhausted, disgraced public defender, he looked back at me one last time. His eyes weren't angry anymore. They were hollow, desperate, and filled with a pathetic, whimpering realization of what he had thrown away for a shortcut to wealth.

I didn't blink. I didn't smile. I simply turned my head away, looking out the tall courthouse windows toward the bright, blooming spring trees outside.

He was no longer worth even a fraction of my attention.
