Chapter 3 - The Legal Counter-Offensive

The offices of Vance, Sterling & Cole Family Law smelled of aged leather and exorbitant hourly rates. Attorney Marcus Vance—no relation to the paramedic—leaned back in his ergonomic leather chair, sliding a thick legal folder across his mahogany desk.

"Mrs. Hayes, let’s look at the battlefield," Vance said, his voice crisp and devoid of false sympathy. He was a shark in a bespoke charcoal suit, exactly what my retainer fee had purchased. "Your parents have filed an official petition for grandparent visitation rights under Section 3104 of the State Domestic Relations Law. They are claiming that you are an unfit, unstable mother attempting to alienate them from their grandchild."

"They filed already?" I asked, my stomach tightening. "It's only been two weeks since the incident."

"People with deep pockets and fragile egos move fast when they feel cornered," Vance replied smoothly. "They are banking on the traditional bias of family court judges who often view grandparent involvement as inherently beneficial. They have submitted character references, tax returns showing substantial assets, and affidavits from neighbors claiming you were a difficult, rebellious child."

He slid a second document across the desk.

"However," Vance continued, a thin smile touching his lips, "they made one monumental, arrogant miscalculation."

"What's that?"

"They assumed you were still the scared teenager who ran away at eighteen. They didn't account for the police report, Officer Miller’s bodycam footage, the ER medical records detailing the puncture wound and tibial fracture, and most importantly, the digital forensics report of the video recorded by your sister's friend."

Vance turned his monitor toward me. It played the crystal-clear video Chloe Vance’s phone had captured. The audio was pristine: Carla’s cold, unrepentant voice ("She talked back to me. Completely unacceptable"), my mother’s dismissive gaslighting ("You have always been dramatic"), and my father’s obstruction of the paramedics.

"This isn't just a win in family court," Vance said softly. "This is an atomic bomb. Carla is currently facing a felony assault charge with a pending trial date. Your parents’ active complicity, obstruction of justice, and attempts to intimidate a witness—you—are documented on police bodycams. If we file a counter-petition for an emergency protective order, not only will their grandparent rights petition be dismissed with prejudice, but we can secure a permanent restraining order barring them from coming within five hundred yards of you or Lily."

"And when they laughed when I first mentioned revoking their rights?" I asked, remembering the dismissive snorts in the backyard.

"Let them laugh now," Vance said. "The deposition is scheduled for Tuesday morning. Be ready."
