Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

Through the frosted glass of the conference room partition, I watched the family dynamic implode in real-time.
My father was pacing, his face flushed a deep, alarming crimson, aggressively jabbing his finger in my mother's face as if blaming her for underestimating me. My mother was shaking her head violently, her hands trembling as she tried to adjust her designer jacket. For forty years, they had ruled their household and extended family through fear, financial manipulation, and absolute emotional tyranny. Now, facing the cold machinery of the justice system, they looked like two small, pathetic children who had finally broken a window they couldn't pay to replace.
Ten minutes later, they re-entered the room.
Cole looked ten years older. He avoided my gaze entirely. "My clients agree to the terms. The petition is withdrawn. The no-contact order will be signed and filed with the judge within the hour."
"Good," Vance said, closing his briefcase with a sharp, echoing snap. "And remember: if either of you so much as drives down our street, we won't call the police. We’ll call the magistrate directly to issue immediate bench warrants for your arrest."
My father stopped at the door, his eyes locking onto mine for a fraction of a second. There was no warmth there—only a cold, impotent hatred. But beneath the hatred, for the very first time, there was fear.
