Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

The sun rose over Lake Michigan the next morning, casting a pale, cold gold light across the bedroom windows of the Moretti estate.

Mara woke up slowly, wrapped in the heavy warmth of down comforters. For a terrifying second, she forgot where she was—she reached out instinctively for the lumpy mattress and the peeling wallpaper of her tiny servant's room in the Thorne mansion.

Then she felt the solid, warm weight of an arm draped possessively over her waist.

She turned her head. Dante was lying beside her, propped up on one elbow, watching her with an expression so tender and completely at odds with his ruthless reputation that it took her breath away.

"Did you sleep?" he asked, his voice low and raspy from the morning.

Mara nodded slowly, pulling the sheet up to her chin. "For the first time in three years... yes. Without nightmares."

Dante smiled, a rare, genuine curve of his lips that made him look dangerous in an entirely new way. He leaned down and pressed a soft, lingering kiss to her forehead, right where the bruise from Bianca's ring had started to fade into a faint yellowish shadow.

"Good," he murmured against her skin. "Because today, we finish cleaning up the trash."

An hour later, sitting at the massive marble breakfast island overlooking the crashing waves, Mara watched as Dante calmly drank his black coffee while scrolling through a tablet displaying morning news reports.

The headlines flashed across the screen in red banner text:

THORNE DYNASTY COLLAPSES OVERNIGHT: FEDERAL RAID TARGETS SENATOR ARTHUR THORNE AMID ALLEGATIONS OF FRAUD AND CORRUPTION.

SOCIALITE BIANCA THORNE FILES FOR EMERGENCY DIVIDEND SPLIT AS HUSBAND PRESTON FLEES JURISDICTION.

Mara stared at the screen, her spoon hovering inches from her bowl of fruit. "You... you dismantled them. In less than twenty-four hours."

"They were rotting from the inside out anyway," Dante said casually, setting his cup down. "I merely accelerated the process. No one who has ever laid a hand on you remains standing in this city, Mara. That is not a negotiation. That is just how the world works now."

Mara looked across the counter at him, her chest tightening with a complex mix of fear, awe, and an undeniable, surging warmth. He was a ruthless monster to his enemies, yes—but to her, he was a fortress.

"And Preston?" she asked quietly. "What happens to him?"

"Preston is currently on a private cargo flight heading as far away from Chicago as his coward's legs can carry him," Dante said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute devotion. "He signed away any claim to you, to his family's name, and to anything else before he left. He doesn't exist anymore."

Mara set her spoon down, her heart racing. She reached out across the marble counter, her fingers brushing against Dante's hand. He turned his palm upward instantly, interlocking his fingers with hers, his grip warm and unbreakable.

"Dante..." she started, her voice trembling slightly. "Why me? Out of all the women in this city, out of all the lives you could have—why did you come back for a maid in a cemetery?"

Dante stood up from his stool, walked around the counter, and pulled Mara gently to her feet. He wrapped both arms around her, pulling her flush against his chest, resting his chin on the top of her head.

"Because from the moment you walked into that lounge eight months ago," Dante whispered, his voice vibrating against her ribs, "you were the only person in Chicago who didn't look at my money, my name, or my power. You looked at me. And the moment you walked out before dawn, leaving that glass of water behind, I knew my life was incomplete without you."

He pulled back just enough to look down into her eyes, his thumb gently tracing her lower lip.

"You were never just a maid, Mara. You were always my queen. You just didn't know it yet."
