Chapter 8 - The Crimson Veil

Six months later, the nursery was no longer quiet.
It was filled with the soft, sweet sounds of cooing, the rustle of diapers, and the gentle patter of tiny feet learning the boundaries of a vast, beautiful world.
Little Elena Moretti—named after Mara's beloved mother—had her father's striking dark eyes and her mother's fierce, resilient spirit. She sat propped up in Dante's lap in the grand study, clutching one of her father's expensive gold fountain pens with absolute, tiny determination while Dante looked down at her as if she were the only treasure on Earth.
Mara stood by the doorway, watching them with a mug of tea in her hand, a quiet smile playing on her lips.
If someone had told her, two years ago while she was scrubbing the marble floors of the Thorne mansion with bruised knees and a broken heart, that she would one day be the mistress of this estate, holding the heart of the most powerful man in Chicago, she would have laughed until she cried.
Dante looked up, catching her reflection in the glass of the balcony door. He gently handed the baby to her personal nanny, who had quietly stepped into the room, and walked across the Persian rug toward Mara.
He wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder, breathing in the familiar scent of vanilla and lavender that always followed her.
"What are you thinking about?" he murmured against her neck.
"I was thinking about the mud," Mara said softly, turning slightly in his arms to look up at him. "And the cemetery. And how strange it is that the worst day of my life was the beginning of everything good."
Dante's expression turned serious. He reached up, gently brushing a curl away from her cheek. "You never have to look back at that mud again, Mara. You survived it alone for too long. But you'll never walk through a storm by yourself again."
May you like
"I know," she whispered, leaning into his touch. "Because I have you."
"And you have her," Dante added, glancing toward the crib where little Elena had fallen fast asleep. "We are an unbreakable house, Mara. Nothing touches us."
