Chapter 10 - The Queen of Chicago

Six weeks later, the annual Chicago Syndicate Gala at the Navy Pier Grand Ballroom was the most heavily guarded, lavishly appointed event in the history of the Midwest.
Elite politicians, international shipping magnates, federal judges, and high-ranking syndicate bosses filled the massive ballroom, dressed in black-tie splendor beneath crystal chandeliers that rivaled the ones at the Obsidian Lounge.
At the center of the grand staircase, the doors opened.
The orchestra swelled into a rich, sweeping classical melody.
Dominic Gallagher descended the steps, looking every bit the undisputed king of the city in a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo.
But it wasn't Dominic that stopped the breath in every throat in the room.
Walking beside him, resting her hand lightly against the crook of his arm, was Harper Quinn.
She wore the custom Milanese wedding gown—layers of sheer ivory silk tulle, shimmering crystal beads, and intricate French lace that caught the golden chandelier light with every step. Her dark hair was styled in an elegant, modern chignon, and her amber-brown eyes surveyed the room with calm, unshakeable poise.
She wasn't hiding. She wasn't terrified. She walked with the absolute, peerless grace of a woman who owned every square foot of the floor beneath her feet.
Sitting at a front-row table, dressed in a sharp new suit, Leo watched his sister with a wide, proud grin, flanked by two smiling security guards who treated him like royalty.
Dominic led Harper to the center of the ballroom floor as the crowd parted like the Red Sea, applause rippling through the room in a wave of respectful, terrified awe.
He pulled her into his arms, their first dance beginning beneath the gaze of a thousand powerful people who now knew exactly who ruled Chicago—and who stood beside him.
“You look breathtaking, my love,” Dominic murmured against her ear as they began to move in sync with the music.
“Don't get used to it,” Harper whispered back with a teasing, radiant smile. “I still have that wrench in my dressing room just in case you step out of line.”
May you like
Dominic let out a deep, rich laugh that echoed warmly across the ballroom—a sound no one in the city had ever heard before.
“I wouldn't dream of it, Mrs. Gallagher,” he whispered, pulling her closer as the cameras flashed like lightning around them, capturing the exact moment the underworld bowed to its true queen.
