Chapter 4 - The Proposal

The silence in the room stretched until it hummed with an almost electric tension.

Harper stepped back, pulling away from his touch as if she had been burned by a live wire. She wrapped her arms tightly around her waist, glaring up at him with a mixture of defiance and profound, paralyzing dread.

“So what happens now?” she demanded, her voice shaking despite her best efforts to sound brave. “You own my debt. You own my firm. You have my brother locked upstairs in a guest suite. Are you going to throw me out? Am I supposed to beg? Is that what this sick game is?”

Dominic didn't answer immediately. He walked slowly over to the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, looking out at the shimmering, rain-slicked lights of the Chicago skyline as lightning flashed silently across the distant horizon.

“I don't play games, Harper,” he said quietly, his back to her. “I build empires. And empires require stability, vision, and absolute loyalty.”

He turned around, his slate-gray eyes locking onto hers with a terrifying, absolute finality.

“Your brother’s three-million-dollar debt is wiped clean, effective immediately,” Dominic stated. “Your firm’s tax liens have been dissolved, and your budget for the waterfront project has been doubled through private Gallagher capital.”

Harper’s jaw dropped. She stared at him as if he were speaking a foreign language. “Wiped clean? Why would you do that? What’s the catch?”

“The catch,” Dominic said, walking slowly back toward her until he was standing just inches away, looking down into her face with an intensity that made her knees weaken, “is simple.”

He reached out, taking her right hand—the very hand that had struck his face an hour ago—and turned it palm-up, tracing the slight redness still lingering across her skin.

“You don't walk out of this building as my debtor, and you don't walk out as my enemy,” Dominic whispered, his voice deep, gravelly, and laced with an unshakable, possessive certainty. “You leave this room as my intended.”

Harper stopped breathing.

The room seemed to tilt sideways. The glittering chandeliers overhead blurred into a single streak of gold light.

“Your... what?” she choked out.

“My future wife,” Dominic said clearly, every word dropping like a heavy stone into a deep pool. “You will stand beside me at the annual Chicago Syndicate Gala next month. You will wear my ring, you will occupy my estate, and you will become the queen of this city.”

Harper pulled her hand violently out of his grip, stepping back until the edge of the mahogany table pressed against her spine.

“You’re insane!” she laughed hysterically, the sheer absurdity of the demand piercing through her shock. “You think you can buy a mafia wedding like you buy a real estate portfolio? You think because you hold my debt and my brother's life in your hands that I’ll just—that I’ll just agree to marry a monster?”

Dominic’s expression didn't change by a fraction of a millimeter. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't lose his temper. He simply stood there, an unmovable mountain of power and wealth, watching her with terrifying patience.

“You can say no,” Dominic said softly. “You can walk out those doors right now. The debt on your firm will be reinstated by midnight. The bank foreclosure notices will hit your mother’s house by tomorrow morning. And your brother... well, Leo will have to find a very safe place to hide, because every syndicate hit squad from here to the Cicero border will be looking to collect on a three-million-dollar unpaid tab.”

He leaned in closer, his voice dropping into a low, hypnotic rumble that vibrated straight down to her bones.

“Or... you can take my hand. You can save your family, build your architectural empire on a scale you never dreamed possible, and rule this city by my side.”

Harper looked into his eyes—cold, ruthless, brilliant, and terrifyingly devoted—and realized with absolute, crushing certainty that she didn't have a choice at all.
