Chapter 9 - The New Foundation

Six months later, the West Haven Community Clinic looked entirely transformed.

The old flickering fluorescent tubes had been replaced by warm, recessed LED lighting. The peeling wallpaper in the waiting room was gone, replaced by fresh pastel paint and comfortable new chairs. A brand-new digital laser printer hummed quietly in the corner, and a plaque mounted near the front entrance bore a simple inscription: The Sophia Moretti Memorial Pediatric & Emergency Fund.

Inside exam room two, Hannah Brooks stood in a crisp white lab coat over a professional navy dress, listening through her stethoscope to the steady, healthy heartbeat of a laughing four-year-old boy while his mother smiled tearfully in the corner.

"All clear, Leo," Hannah said cheerfully, handing the boy a colorful animal bandage. "You’ve got the lungs of an Olympic runner."

When the patients had cleared out for the afternoon, Hannah walked out to the parking lot.

A sleek, black vintage Bentley was parked by the curb.

Damen leaned against the passenger door, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, holding a small bouquet of fresh white lilies. As soon as he saw her, a warm, genuine smile broke across his chiseled face—the kind of smile that only she ever got to see.

Hannah walked up to him, shaking her head with a fond, affectionate grin. "You know, Mr. Moretti, if you keep showing up at my clinic every Tuesday afternoon, my patients are going to start thinking I’m dating a mob boss."

"Let them talk," Damen murmured, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her close against his chest. "Besides, everyone in Chicago already knows the mob boss works for the clinic’s chief administrator now."

Hannah laughed, looping her arms around his neck. "That’s right. I control the budget."

Damen leaned down, capturing her lips in a deep, tender kiss that tasted of sunlight, spring air, and a future built out of the ashes of their old ghosts.
