Chapter 10 - The Empire of Light

That evening, the sun dipped below the Chicago skyline, casting long, golden ribbons across the waters of Lake Michigan and turning the limestone facade of the North Shore estate into a castle of warm amber light.

In the grand library, surrounded by shelves of ancient leather-bound books and modern financial portfolios, a fire crackled softly in the massive stone hearth.

Hannah sat curled in the corner of a deep leather sofa, reading a medical journal, while Damen sat across from her at the mahogany desk, reviewing the final construction permits for the new community health centers funded by the Falcone-Moretti Foundation across the Midwest.

The heavy oak door opened softly, and Mrs. Gable stepped inside carrying a tray of warm tea.

"Everything is set for the foundation gala on Friday, Mr. Moretti," the housekeeper said quietly. "The mayor’s office confirmed attendance."

"Thank you, Mrs. Gable," Damen said without looking up from his papers.

As the housekeeper slipped back out of the room, Damen set his pen down, rubbed his eyes, and looked across the room at Hannah.

The soft glow of the firelight caught the smooth lines of her face, the quiet confidence in her posture, and the complete absence of the exhaustion and fear that had defined her when they first collided on that rainy downtown sidewalk six months ago.

He stood up, walked across the Persian rug, and sat down on the sofa beside her, gently pulling the medical journal from her hands and setting it on the coffee table.

Hannah looked up, blinking in surprise. "Damen? I haven't finished checking the pediatric dosing charts."

"The charts can wait, Dr. Brooks," he murmured, sliding his arm around her shoulders and pulling her against his side.

Hannah rested her head contentedly against his chest, listening to the strong, steady rhythm of his heart—a heart that had once stopped beating in the dark, but now lived entirely in the light of the woman who refused to let him go.

Around them, the house stood silent, secure, and warm—a fortress built not on fear or shadows, but on the unbreakable strength of two souls who had saved each other from the cold.
