Chapter 7 - Salt Air and New Beginnings

Six months later, the morning sun over the North Carolina coast didn't look like the harsh, blinding glare of downtown Raleigh office buildings. It was soft, golden, and diffused through a light maritime haze that smelled faintly of salt water, damp sand, and pine trees.

The wrap-around wooden porch of the coastal cottage creaked gently underfoot.

Maggie sat in a comfortable rocking chair, cradling a sleeping three-month-old baby girl in her arms. The baby—named Lily, after their mother—had dark, tufted hair and peaceful, steady breathing that rose and fell against Maggie’s chest.

Down on the lawn, Ryan was tossing a bright red rubber ball to a scruffy, energetic golden retriever puppy that scampered across the lush green grass, barking with absolute joy.

Life wasn't a fairy tale anymore. Fairy tales were illusions sold by men who wanted to keep you locked in a tower. Real life was messy, hard-fought, and required courage, resilience, and a family who refused to let you stay in the dark.

A sleek black sedan pulled up into the shell driveway of the cottage.

Ryan dropped the ball, wiped his hands on his jeans, and walked over to greet the car as the door opened, revealing their mother—whom they had finally brought down from the city to live with them permanently, safe from the past they had all left behind.

Maggie looked down at her daughter, brushing a soft curl away from the infant’s forehead. The belt, the hotel room, the crystal chandelier, the fear—they were all ghosts of another lifetime, buried beneath the crashing waves of the Atlantic.

She looked up at the endless blue horizon, took a deep breath of the salty breeze, and smiled.

For the first time in her life, the story belonged entirely to her.
