Chapter 4 - The Saturday Evening Gala

By Saturday evening, Whitmore House had transformed into a glittering showcase of wealth and influence.
Cars lined the half-mile driveway—Bentleys, Rolls-Royces, and sleek black Mercedes bearing diplomatic plates. Inside, politicians, real estate moguls, and venture capitalists mingled beneath the massive crystal chandeliers, sipping vintage champagne and discussing acquisitions worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
Annie was assigned to circulate the perimeter of the grand ballroom with a silver tray filled with hors d'oeuvres.
Her dress uniform was spotless, her dark hair pinned neatly back, but her eyes scanned the crowd with hyper-vigilance. She spotted Victoria near the grand piano, surrounded by a group of wealthy young socialites and tech executives. Victoria was laughing, but every few minutes, her eyes darted across the room toward Annie with predatory sharpness.
“Watch your step, new girl,” a voice murmured beside her.
Annie turned to see Rosa passing by with a tray of empty champagne flutes. The older woman’s eyes were filled with quiet concern. “Miss Whitmore has been talking to the catering coordinator. She’s trying to find a reason to have you dismissed before the night is over.”
“Let her try,” Annie whispered back, keeping her posture upright. “I haven’t dropped a single glass.”
An hour later, the main doors of the ballroom opened, and the atmosphere in the room shifted. A murmur rippled through the gathered crowd.
Julian Rhodes had arrived.
Founder and CEO of Rhodes Capital, a multi-billion-dollar private equity firm currently engaged in a massive, hostile takeover battle for control of several key shipping ports along the eastern seaboard—ports currently owned by Whitmore Global Logistics.
Julian was tall, devastatingly handsome in an immaculate midnight-blue tuxedo, with sharp silver-streaked hair at his temples and an aura of absolute, unshakable dominance. He didn't smile as he entered; he surveyed the room the way a general surveys a battlefield.
Jonathan Whitmore immediately excused himself from a conversation with the mayor and walked across the room to intercept his primary corporate rival.
“Julian,” Jonathan said, his voice carrying smoothly over the classical music. “I wasn't certain your security team would allow you to step foot inside my home.”
Julian offered a cool, razor-sharp smile, shaking Jonathan’s hand with just enough pressure to establish dominance. “Jonathan. I never turn down an invitation to observe an empire in the process of restructuring.”
The two men exchanged polite verbal venom while the surrounding guests pretended not to listen, hanging on every syllable of the brewing corporate war.
Victoria, seeing an opportunity to shine in front of the city's most powerful eligible billionaire, glided over to her father’s side, flashing her brightest, most rehearsed socialite smile.
“Mr. Rhodes,” Victoria purred, extending a slender hand adorned with a massive diamond ring. “Welcome to Whitmore House. I’m Victoria, corporate strategist for my father’s logistics division.”
Julian glanced down at her hand, took it briefly, and released it with polite indifference. “Ms. Whitmore. I’ve read your quarterly financial reports. Very aggressive. Unfortunately, aggression without infrastructure tends to collapse under pressure.”
Victoria’s smile flickered for a fraction of a second before she recovered, her eyes flashing with wounded pride.
At that exact moment, Annie was passing behind them, balancing her silver tray as she navigated the crowded perimeter near the French doors.
Victoria saw her.
With a subtle, lightning-fast shift of her weight, Victoria deliberately extended her high-heeled shoe directly into Annie’s path.

Annie’s foot caught the heel.
For a horrifying second, gravity took over. The silver tray tipped forward, sending a dozen expensive crystal flutes filled with sparkling cider crashing directly toward the polished floor—and straight toward Julian Rhodes’s immaculate Italian leather shoes.
