Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Whitmore Logistics

The fallout from the Saturday evening gala was not just a social disaster; it was a corporate earthquake.

By Sunday morning, financial blogs, local news stations, and national business columns were running breaking headlines: WHITMORE GLOBAL LOGISTICS FACES FEDERAL INVESTIGATION FOLLOWING FRAUD ALLEGATIONS DISCLOSED AT PRIVATE GALA.

Inside the private study of Whitmore House, the morning sunlight cut through the heavy velvet drapes, illuminating a room filled with tension.

Victoria sat in a leather armchair, her makeup ruined, her designer dress wrinkled, staring blankly at a stack of federal subpoena notices spread across the mahogany desk.

Jonathan stood by the window, looking out over the sprawling estate.

“The board of directors has called an emergency vote for ten o'clock this morning,” Jonathan said without turning around. “They are stripping you of your executive title, Victoria. Your corporate accounts have been frozen pending a full federal audit of the tax write-offs.”

“You did this,” Victoria whispered, her voice cracking with pure, venomous hatred as she looked up at her father. “You brought that girl into this house just to destroy me! You used her as a weapon!”

“I didn't use her,” Jonathan replied coldly, turning to face his daughter. “I simply stopped protecting you from the consequences of your own arrogance. You spent years treating people like disposable objects. You thought your name, your wealth, and your position made you immune to justice. You were wrong.”

Before Victoria could scream another accusation, a soft knock sounded at the open study door.

Annie stood in the doorway. She was wearing her normal street clothes—a simple navy coat, sensible boots, and a knitted scarf. She carried a small canvas duffel bag in one hand.

Jonathan’s expression softened instantly as he looked at her.

“Annie,” he said, stepping away from the window. “Are you certain about this? The scholarship fund we discussed yesterday will cover your mother’s medical expenses in full, starting this morning. You don't have to leave.”

Annie offered a quiet, resolute smile, shaking her head.

“Thank you, Mr. Whitmore, for the scholarship offer and for everything else,” Annie said respectfully. “I’m glad my mother’s medical bills are taken care of. But I earned every dollar of my wages this weekend, and I’m not staying in a house where I’m a pawn in a family war.”

Jonathan sighed, a deep look of respect crossing his weathered features. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a heavy, cream-colored envelope, and placed it on the edge of the desk.

“At least take this recommendation letter,” Jonathan said. “Signed by me. It will open doors at any law firm or corporate compliance agency in the country. Though, knowing you, you’ll probably want to build your own door.”

Annie walked forward, picked up the envelope, and slid it into her bag.

“Thank you, sir,” she said.

As she turned to walk down the hallway toward the grand staircase, Julian Rhodes was leaning against the library doorframe, arms crossed over his chest, watching her with an amused, appreciative glint in his gray eyes.

“Leaving so soon, Ms. Carter?” Julian asked smoothly. “I was going to offer you a position as head of corporate compliance at Rhodes Capital. We desperately need someone who isn't afraid to clean house.”

Annie paused, looking up at the billionaire whose expensive shoes she had accidentally ruined less than twelve hours earlier.

“Thank you for the offer, Mr. Rhodes,” Annie replied, a sharp, confident smile touching her lips. “But I think I’d rather start at the bottom of my own ladder. That way, nobody can ever push me off.”

Julian chuckled, a rich, genuine sound that echoed down the polished hallway. “Keep that spine, Annie Carter. You’re going to run this city one day.”
