Chapter 4 - The Crack of the Whip

The sharp crack of the braided leather riding crop echoed off the high vaulted ceilings of the grand ballroom, sounding like a pistol shot in the silent, suffocating space.

Camille stumbled backward against the pecan-praline cake table, one hand catching its edge to keep from falling. Several women gasped in horror. A crystal champagne flute slipped from a guest’s fingers and shattered on the marble floor with a tinkling crash.

A red, angry, painful line instantly burned across Camille’s left shoulder where the crop had caught the delicate fabric of her silver evening gown, tearing the silk and raising a welt against her skin.

Andre lunged forward at last, a guttural cry of fury tearing from his throat. “MOTHER!”

But Camille raised a single hand.

“No.”

Andre stopped dead in his tracks, his hands outstretched, his face pale with shock and disbelief.

Slowly, agonizingly, Camille straightened. She let go of the cake table, stood tall, and squared her shoulders.

Lorraine stood panting slightly, her chest heaving under her crimson velvet gown, a triumphant, manic smile twisting her lips. She expected tears. She expected Camille to fall to her knees, to beg for mercy, to run crying from the room in absolute humiliation.

Instead, Camille looked at her mother-in-law with such astonishing, bone-chilling calm that Lorraine’s triumphant smile instantly faltered.

“You should have listened to me the first time, Lorraine,” Camille said. Her voice was not trembling. It was crystal clear, ringing out across every corner of the ballroom.

Lorraine blinked, her grip on the riding crop loosening slightly. “What... what are you talking about?”

Camille turned her head slightly toward the cousin standing near the stage holding her smartphone up high.

“Don't stop recording,” Camille instructed clearly.

Then, with agonizing slowness, Camille reached into her silver evening clutch, withdrew the matte black USB flash drive, and held it up between her fingers for the entire room to see.

“You wanted witnesses, Lorraine,” Camille’s gaze traveled slowly across the sea of wealthy socialites, board members, and journalists standing frozen around the dance floor. “Now you have them.”

A heavy, suffocating silence descended upon the ballroom.

What Lorraine Callaway did not know—what no one in this room except Camille and her forensic accountants knew—was that the woman she had just humiliated in front of half of Nashville’s wealthiest social circle had spent four months collecting absolute, undeniable proof of the Callaway family’s financial collapse, corporate fraud, and embezzlement.

And before Andre’s birthday cake was cut, the riding crop would become the smallest scandal in the room.

“What is that?” Andre demanded, his voice shaking with a dangerous mixture of anger and confusion as he looked from his mother to his wife. “Cam... what’s on that drive?”

Before Camille could answer, Lorraine recovered her composure, her voice rising in a shrill, frantic shriek. “She’s lying! She’s mentally unstable! Security! Remove this woman from my house immediately!”

Two private security guards in black suits stepped out from the wings of the ballroom, hesitating as they looked at Andre.

Andre didn't move. He looked at Camille, the realization finally dawning behind his eyes that his wife hadn't been cowering—she had been hunting.

“Don't touch her,” Andre ordered the guards, his voice dropping into the cold, commanding tone of a chief executive. He turned to his mother. “Mother. What did she mean by ‘witnesses’? What have you done?”

Lorraine’s face lost every trace of color. She looked at Camille, seeing not a helpless, ordinary woman from a disgraced family, but an executioner holding the axe.

“You destroyed my company, Lorraine,” Camille said loudly, stepping out from the cake table and walking toward the center of the dance floor. “You embezzled three million dollars from the family foundation. You forged David Callaway’s signature while he was in a coma. And as of four o'clock this afternoon, you quietly sold off twenty-eight percent of our voting shares to an unregistered shell corporation controlled by your brother Richard to stage a hostile takeover of Callaway Meridian.”

The ballroom erupted into instant, deafening chaos.

Board members began shouting over one another. Reporters frantically started typing on their phones. Business partners backed away from Lorraine as if she carried a contagious disease.

“It’s a lie! All of it is a lie!” Lorraine screamed, pointing the riding crop at Camille like a weapon. “She’s trying to steal the company!”

“Is it a lie, Lorraine?” Camille asked calmly. She turned toward the grand mahogany double doors at the main entrance.

The heavy doors swung open.

Two federal agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission, flanked by four local police officers and Marcus holding a portable digital projector, walked into the ballroom.

The lead federal agent stepped up onto the edge of the dance floor, flashing a gold badge.

“Mrs. Lorraine Callaway?” the agent asked coldly. “You are under arrest for wire fraud, corporate forgery, and grand larceny. Step away from the property.”
