Chapter 9 - Roots and Soil

The afternoon sun beat down warmly on the rich, dark soil of the garden beds lining the stone terrace.

Evan knelt in the dirt once again, but this time there was no fake beard, no canvas cap, and no hidden cameras. He wore a simple cotton t-shirt and work gloves, carefully guiding young rose roots into the earth while Sophie and Caleb worked beside him with miniature plastic shovels, making more mess than actual progress.

Grace stood nearby on the patio, watching them with a quiet, approving smile as she sipped her tea.

The contrast between the man kneeling in the dirt now and the syndicate boss who ruled the northeastern shipping lanes was absolute. Yet, to Evan, there was no contradiction. The power he wielded in boardrooms and back alleys was just a tool to maintain the walls around this exact garden.

“Daddy, look! I found a worm!” Caleb announced proudly, holding up a wriggling piece of earthworm on a plastic trowel with absolute fascination.

“That’s a very healthy worm, buddy,” Evan praised solemnly, wiping a smudge of dirt off his son’s cheek with the back of his glove. “Put him back in the soil so he can help the roses grow.”

Caleb carefully lowered the worm back into the hole, patting the dirt down with tiny, enthusiastic slaps.

Sophie knelt beside her father, helping him steady a young stem against a wooden stake. She looked up at him, her dark-blond eyes full of a quiet, unshakable trust.

“You’re never going away again, right, Daddy?” she asked softly.

Evan stopped working. He took off his gardening gloves, set them aside, and turned to fully face his daughter. He placed both hands gently on her shoulders, looking straight into her eyes so she could see the absolute truth reflected there.

“I am never going away, Sophie,” Evan said, his voice deep, steady, and clear. “I’m right here. Today, tomorrow, and every day after that. Nothing and no one will ever separate us again.”

Sophie smiled—a bright, wide, completely uninhibited smile that reached all the way to her eyes. She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder. Caleb scrambled over a second later, wrapping his small arms around both of them in a messy, chaotic pile of family warmth.

Evan held them both tight, closing his eyes against the warm spring breeze.

The ghosts were gone. The empire was secure. And the garden was finally blooming.
