Chapter 3 - The Reconstruction

An hour later, the terrace was completely empty of guests, champagne flutes, and shattered glass. The catering staff had packed their vans and vanished twenty minutes after Vanessa’s frantic exit.

Evan stood inside the massive, sunlit master suite on the third floor of the estate. The room smelled of fresh lavender and cedarwood.

Sitting on the king-sized bed, wearing oversized cartoon pajamas that Grace had dug out of the bottom drawer, were Sophie and Caleb. Caleb was happily feeding crackers to his tattered brown rabbit, while Sophie leaned against Evan’s side, her small hand firmly clutching his thumb as if afraid he might dissolve into smoke if she let go.

The heavy oak door opened, and Miller, Evan’s chief legal counsel—a sharp-dressed man in a charcoal suit carrying a thick leather briefcase—stepped quietly into the room.

“The accounts are frozen, boss,” Miller reported without preamble, his voice professional and crisp. “Vanessa’s father’s corporate debt has been called in full. They’ll be bankrupt by Tuesday morning. As for Vanessa herself, our surveillance team tracked her boarding a one-way flight to Miami under her maiden name. She won't be a problem again.”

“Good,” Evan murmured, keeping his eyes on his daughter’s hair. “Make sure the staff sign new non-disclosure agreements with tripled salaries. I want absolute discretion.”

“Done,” Miller said. He glanced at Grace, who was standing quietly by the window folding laundry, then looked back at Evan. “There’s one more thing. The regional council is meeting tonight in Stamford to vote on the port expansion logistics. They’re expecting you to call in from London.”

Evan sighed softly, gently untangling his thumb from Sophie’s grip and resting his hand on her head.

“Tell them I’ve changed my travel plans,” Evan said, his voice carrying the quiet, unshakable authority of a man who no longer needed to hide behind disguises or secret names. “Tell them the groundskeeper found a few weeds in the garden that needed pulling, and the job took longer than expected.”

Miller offered a faint, knowing smirk, nodded once, and slipped silently out of the room.

Evan turned back to his children.

Sophie looked up at him, her dark-blond eyes wide and serious. “Are you going to stay, Daddy? For real this time?”

Evan scooped her up into his arms, burying his face in her neck, feeling the warm, steady weight of her laughter as she squirmed away from his scratchy chin.

“I’m not going anywhere, peanut,” Evan whispered fiercely, kissing her cheek. “Daddy’s home for good.”

Outside the tall french windows, the autumn sun dipped below the tree line of the Greenwich estate, painting the sky in deep shades of gold and amber. The garden was quiet, the roses were trimmed, and the ghosts had finally been laid to rest.
