Chapter 10 - Winter Light

Later that evening, after the gala had concluded and the ballroom had quieted down, Evelyn walked out onto the private balcony of her Brookline estate, wrapping a thick cashmere shawl tightly around her shoulders.
The snow was falling in slow, gentle flakes, blanketing the manicured lawns and pine trees in a tranquil, glowing white.
Inside the warm, brightly lit living room, Caleb, Jonah, and Miles had finally worn themselves out, curling up together on the plush rug beside the roaring stone fireplace, fast asleep with their toy trucks still clutched in their small hands.
The heavy glass door slid open quietly, and Sarah stepped out onto the balcony, holding two cups of hot chamomile tea. She handed one to Evelyn with a warm, knowing smile.
“It was a magnificent night, Evelyn,” Sarah murmured, looking out at the snowy garden. “You really changed a lot of lives tonight.”
Evelyn took the warm ceramic cup between her hands, watching the steam rise into the cold winter air.
“We changed our own lives, Sarah,” Evelyn corrected softly. “Everyone who helped along the way just played their part in the story.”
She thought briefly of Nathaniel, of Victoria, of the cold stone floors of the Beacon Hill mansion, and of the cream-colored envelope that had started it all. They had sent that invitation expecting to find a broken, isolated woman sitting quietly in the shadows.
Instead, they had awakened a storm.

Evelyn took a slow sip of her tea, feeling the warmth spread deep into her chest. She looked back through the window at her three sleeping sons—safe, cherished, and entirely free.
The cold was gone. The winter had passed. And the horizon stretched out before them, endless, brilliant, and entirely their own.
