Chapter 5 - The Peace of the Horizon

Twenty minutes later, the Newport estate was eerily quiet.

The guests had fled like rats from a sinking ship, scattering down the driveway in their luxury cars to escape the social fallout. The white rose arches stood abandoned. The string quartet had packed their instruments and left.

Only the Ashfords remained.

Victoria sat rigidly on a wrought-iron patio chair, her face buried in her hands, her silver dress smelling faintly of defeat. Nathaniel stood near the cliffside railing, staring blankly out at the grey Atlantic waves, his tie torn off and thrown onto the grass.

Evelyn stood a few yards away, holding the hands of Caleb, Jonah, and Miles.

The three little boys were completely unfazed by the drama, looking around the empty garden with childish fascination.

“Mommy, can we get ice cream now?” Miles asked tugging gently on Evelyn’s sleeve.

Evelyn smiled down at him, her eyes softening completely. “Yes, my love. We’re all done here.”

She looked up one last time at Nathaniel. He turned his head slowly, his eyes red-rimmed and hollow, carrying the unbearable weight of a man who had traded everything of real value for the illusion of status.

“Evelyn...” Nathaniel choked out, his voice barely audible over the sound of the wind. “The boys... do I have... can I see them?”

Evelyn didn't shout. She didn't gloat. She simply gave him the most devastating response possible: complete, absolute indifference.

“You had your chance four years ago, Nathaniel, when you chose your mother’s silence over your own flesh and blood,” Evelyn said calmly. “You wanted a polished family portrait. Well, look around. You got exactly what you asked for.”

She turned away, walking down the stone pathway with her three sons safely and proudly by her side.

As they climbed back into the sleek black Mercedes-Maybach, Evelyn looked out the window one last time as the estate faded into the distance.

She wasn't angry anymore. She wasn't broken. She had her boys, she had her empire, and she had her peace.

The Ashfords had invited her to watch him marry another woman, expecting her to arrive small and broken. Instead, she had arrived as a storm—and left nothing behind but the ruins of their own making.
