Chapter 6 - The Long Walk Home

The neon sign of the municipal detention facility buzzed softly in the damp evening air, casting a sickly yellow glow over the chain-link fence.
Nathan didn't wait for the security guards to escort him. He strode through the heavy steel doors of the processing center with the unyielding momentum of a man who had just moved mountains to reclaim what was his.
The heavy metal door of the temporary holding cell clicked open with a mechanical clatter.
Grace was sitting on the edge of the steel cot, her bandaged shoulder resting awkwardly against the cinder-block wall, her eyes tired and red-rimmed from hours of silent crying. When the door swung open, she flinched, expecting another round of hostile interrogations.
Then she saw him.
Nathan stood in the doorway, his tie gone, his suit jacket slung over one broad shoulder, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He looked exhausted, battle-scarred, and completely, unconditionally hers.
“Nathan?” she whispered, her voice cracking as she stood up slowly from the cot.
He didn't answer with words. He crossed the small room in two long strides, wrapped his arms gently around her uninjured side, and pulled her against his chest with a desperate, crushing intensity.
Grace buried her face into his shirt, letting out all the terror, the grief, and the agonizing weight of the last twenty-four hours in one long, shuddering sob.
“It’s over,” Nathan murmured into her hair, his own voice thick with emotion. “It’s all over, Grace. You’re safe. She’s gone. Nobody is ever going to touch you or our daughter ever again.”
Grace pulled back slightly, looking up into his face with wide, tear-filled eyes. “The charges? The warrants?”
“Dropped and expunged within the hour,” Nathan replied, a small, genuine smile finally breaking across his face. “The federal prosecutor’s office just issued a full retraction and cleared your name of every single fabricated allegation. Victoria is currently facing federal indictment for corporate fraud and extortion. Her family’s empire is undergoing complete asset forfeiture.”
Grace stared at him, the magnitude of his victory washing over her like a warm wave. “You gave it all up, didn't you? The board seats, the inheritance… everything.”
Nathan reached up, gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from her forehead with calloused, steady fingers.
“I didn't give anything up,” Nathan said softly. “I finally traded a pile of dirty money for the only things in this world that ever truly mattered.”

He took her by her good hand, interlocking his fingers tightly with hers.
“Now… there’s just one more stop we need to make before we go home.”
