Chapter 8 - The Sunrise Over Cole Manor

The morning sun rose slowly over the sprawling eastern hills, bathing the grand limestone facade of the Cole mansion in a warm, golden luminescence.

The police cars were gone. The reporters had vanished, their cameras turned toward newer, noisier scandals. The heavy wrought-iron gates stood open, welcoming the morning breeze.

Inside the grand master suite on the second floor, sunlight streamed through the tall arched windows, pooling warmly on the hardwood floor.

Grace stood by the window, wearing a soft silk robe, holding a steaming mug of black coffee in her left hand while her right arm rested comfortably in a lightweight sling. She looked out over the perfectly manicured lawns and the endless green gardens stretching toward the horizon.

Behind her, the large mahogany bed was rumpled and warm.

Nathan walked out of the en-suite bathroom, barefoot and wearing a simple linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up. He walked up silently behind Grace, wrapping his arms securely around her waist, resting his chin comfortably on her uninjured shoulder.

“What are you thinking about?” Nathan murmured, pressing a soft kiss against the side of her neck.

Grace leaned back against his solid chest, letting out a relaxed, contented sigh.

“I was thinking about how much laundry there is to do in this house,” she teased softly, a playful smile touching her lips.

Nathan chuckled, tightening his embrace. “Well, I hear the previous maid was terrible at her job. We might have to fire her and replace her with someone much more stubborn.”

“Oh, really?” Grace turned her head, looking up into his amber eyes with a gentle, teasing light. “And who would that be?”

“The new lady of the house,” Nathan said softly, his voice dropping into a warm, serious register. “Provided she agrees to a much better contract this time around—one that includes eternal custody of my heart, fifty percent ownership of my soul, and absolutely no more disappearing acts.”

Grace smiled, her eyes shining with unshed tears of pure happiness. She raised her coffee mug in a mock toast.

“It’s a deal, Mr. Cole.”

Down the hallway, a small pair of pattering footsteps echoed across the polished floorboards.

The door to the master bedroom pushed open with a soft squeak.

Little Lily stood in the doorway, wearing oversized yellow pajamas that dragged on the floor, holding her stuffed rabbit in one hand and rubbing her sleepy eyes with the other.

She looked up at the two of them standing by the window in the golden morning light.

“Mommy? Daddy?” she mumbled sleepily.

Grace and Nathan didn't hesitate. They both dropped down to their knees simultaneously, opening their arms wide.

Lily squealed with delight, breaking into a run across the rug and diving directly into the middle of them. They caught her effortlessly, tumbling backward onto the plush carpet in a tangle of limbs, laughter, and warm, uninterrupted embraces.

The past was buried. The empire had been rebuilt on truth. And the shadows that had haunted them for five long years were completely burned away by the morning sun.

They were finally home.
