Chapter 10 - The Horizon Cleared

The press conference will go down in Chicago corporate history as a masterclass in transparency and control.
By sunset, the federal oversight committee—having spent six hours conducting a surprise, unannounced audit of every single digital ledger and physical warehouse bay at Costello Logistics—issued an official, unreserved statement confirming that Project Horizon was operating with 100% regulatory compliance, integrity, and operational excellence.
The Chicago Tribune retracted its story before the evening edition went to print, and the rival syndicate’s short-selling attempt collapsed in a humiliating financial disaster on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange.
By nine o'clock that evening, the media vans had packed up their cables and driven away, leaving the sprawling logistics campus bathed in the calm, steady light of the evening lamps.
In the private family quarters on the top floor of Silas’s lakeside estate in Evanston, the world was quiet.
Leo was fast asleep in his bedroom, curled up under a star-patterned quilt, his custom hearing aids resting safely on the nightstand next to a crayon drawing of a large, friendly cargo plane carrying chocolate milk across the moon.
Downstairs, out on the wide stone terrace overlooking the dark, gentle waves of Lake Michigan, the night air was warm and sweet with the scent of blooming summer jasmine.
Khloe stood by the stone balustrade, holding a glass of chilled white wine, watching the distant lights of cargo ships twinkling on the horizon.
Footsteps approached softly behind her. A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her back against a warm, solid chest. Silas rested his chin gently on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of her hair.
"The federal committee chairman called me ten minutes ago," Silas murmured against her skin. "He apologized for the inconvenience, and then asked if he could personally invest his personal foundation's capital into expanding Project Horizon to the East Coast."
Khloe smiled, leaning back into his embrace. "And what did you tell him?"
"I told him our logistics pipeline is already fully booked," Silas replied, turning her gently in his arms so she was facing him. The lake lights reflected in his grey eyes, stripped of all armor, all corporate shadows, and all fear. "I told him we only take on partners who know how to listen when the world gets loud."
Khloe raised her glass, clinking it lightly against his. "That sounds like a very strict operational policy, Mr. Costello."

"The best ones always are," Silas smiled softly.
He leaned down, capturing her lips in a long, unhurried kiss that tasted of home, safety, and a horizon that finally stretched out infinitely before them—clear, bright, and completely unclouded by the dark.
