Chapter 5 - The Landing Lights

The wheels of the Bombardier Global 7500 touched down on the private runway at O’Hare with a barely perceptible whisper of rubber against wet concrete. The deceleration was smooth, effortless, engineered to perfection—the kind of landing that made you forget you were hurtling through the stratosphere just moments before.

As the aircraft taxied toward the private executive hangar, the heavy exterior doors opened to reveal a row of three black Mercedes-Maybachs idling in the warmth of the indoor facility.

Leo stirred, finally opening his big, dark eyes. He blinked against the bright lights of the hangar, looking around the unfamiliar cabin with a brief, instinctual flash of panic.

Before the terror could take root, Silas was on one knee beside him.

He didn't grab him. He didn't shout.

Instead, Silas raised his hands slowly, his fingers moving with careful, deliberate precision through the shapes Khloe had taught him on the napkin.

L-E-O. D-A-D. S-A-F-E. H-O-M-E.

The boy stared at his father’s hands. Slowly, the frantic, jagged hitch in his breathing smoothed out. A small, tentative smile broke across his sleepy face, and he reached out, signing back two simple letters: H-I.

Silas closed his eyes for a single second, a wave of profound relief washing over his harsh features, before he scooped his son up into his arms and stood tall.

As they moved toward the aircraft exit, accompanied by Sterling, Silas paused at the top of the airstairs and looked back toward the galley where Khloe stood watching.

He didn't say a word. He simply raised his hand in a silent, respectful salute—not the gesture of a billionaire master to an employee, but the nod of one traveler to another, acknowledging the guide who had finally led them through the storm.

Gemma let out a long, shuddering breath as the cabin door sealed shut behind them, cutting off the noise of the hangar. "Well," she whispered, her eyes wide as saucers. "That was... certainly not a normal Chicago charter."

Khloe looked down at the heavy black business card resting in her palm. She turned it over, tracing the silver embossed letter with her thumb, before slipping it securely into the pocket of her uniform skirt.

"No, Gemma," Khloe said softly, walking back into the galley to begin resetting the cabin for the next flight. "That wasn't normal at all. That was just the first leg of the journey."
