Chapter 7 - The Interception at DuskThe sun had fully set by the time Claire walked back into the kitchen, carrying her light jacket over her arm and looking as unbothered as if she had just strolled back from the grocery store.

Adrian was already waiting there.

He leaned against the marble island, a crystal glass of bourbon in his hand. The kitchen lights were dimmed, casting soft amber reflections across his tailored suit.

“Vance is currently soaking his bruised ego in an ice bath,” Adrian noted dryly as Claire poured herself a glass of ice water. “Miller refuses to talk about how a woman in running shoes dismantled him in four seconds.”

“Tell them it was five seconds,” Claire corrected mildly, taking a sip of her water. “I was feeling generous.”

Adrian pushed off the counter, closing the distance between them until he was standing close enough to feel the warmth radiating off her skin. The playful edge in his voice vanished, replaced by a heavy, intense gravity.

“You’re dangerous, Claire,” Adrian said softly, his voice dropping an octave. “Every day you stay in this house, you put yourself in the crosshairs of men who don't care about rules, boundaries, or children.”

Claire didn't back away. She stood her ground, looking up into his dark, troubled eyes.

“Men like you?” she asked quietly.

“Men worse than me,” Adrian replied, his jaw tightening. “Héctor Morales isn't going to let this go. He lost three men. His pride was wounded. He’s going to come for this estate with everything he has.”

“Let him come,” Claire said, her voice dropping all pretense of casual conversation, carrying the cold, absolute authority of a veteran who had stared down armies. “I didn't leave the service because I was afraid of a fight, Mr. Mercer. I left because I wanted something worth protecting. And right now... this house is worth it.”

Adrian stared at her—really looked at her—taking in the strong line of her jaw, the fierce intelligence in her hazel eyes, and the curves that housed the strength of a lioness.

Without thinking, he reached out, his warm fingers brushing a stray lock of brown hair away from her cheek.

Claire’s breath hitched slightly, her eyes flickering down to his lips for a fraction of a second before locking back onto his gaze.

“And what about you, Claire?” Adrian murmured, his thumb lightly tracing the edge of her jawline. “Who protects you?”

“I take care of myself,” she whispered, though she didn't pull away from his touch.

Before Adrian could lean in closer, the digital security console on the kitchen wall let out a sharp, piercing double-beep.
