Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the Past

While the upper levels of the estate were bathed in the quiet, secure light of a new era, the subterranean levels—the deep cellars and auxiliary security monitoring rooms built during the prohibition era—held a very different kind of atmosphere.

Julian Sterling sat bound to a heavy iron chair in the center of the concrete-walled vault.

His bespoke charcoal suit was wrinkled and stained with sweat. His silver-rimmed glasses lay shattered on the floor beside his left boot. Standing directly in front of him was Vincent, casually cleaning a tactical knife with an oil-soaked rag, while two armed guards stood watch near the heavy steel exit.

The iron door groaned open.

Lucas walked into the vault, his footsteps echoing sharply off the damp concrete walls. He didn't look like a vengeful mob boss; he looked like an auditor reviewing a failing portfolio—calm, detached, and entirely devoid of mercy.

Julian raised his head, his face bruised on one cheek from his initial capture, his eyes burning with a desperate, venomous fury.

“You think you’ve won, Lucas?” Julian rasped, his voice cracked from hours of silence. “You think wiping me out fixes the syndicate? The Chicago families already know about the asset freeze. The federal grand jury in Manhattan has already received the preliminary files on your shipping fronts. Even if you kill me, the machine is already rolling over you.”

Lucas stopped two paces away from the chair. He looked down at his former friend with a profound, chilling indifference.

“You always mistook cruelty for strength, Julian,” Lucas said quietly. “You thought my father’s empire survived because he terrorized his enemies. You didn't understand that an empire only survives when the people guarding it have something worth protecting.”

“Protecting?” Julian spat out a bitter laugh. “A maid’s brat? You risked twenty years of strategic dominance over a cleaning woman’s kid?”

Lucas’s expression didn't change, but the air in the vault seemed to drop twenty degrees.

“Lily did what your entire board of directors, your compliance officers, and your high-priced security consultants failed to do,” Lucas said, leaning in close so his voice was little more than a whisper. “She saw a threat, she understood the cost, and she acted. That is leadership, Julian. Something you never possessed.”

Lucas straightened up, turning his back on the prisoner.

“Keep him here until the federal marshals arrive with the sealed transfer warrants at dawn,” Lucas instructed Vincent without turning around. “And make sure he has plenty of time to reflect on how a three-year-old girl dismantled his life’s work.”

“Understood, Boss,” Vincent replied, his knife clicking shut with a sharp, final snap.
