Chapter 9 - A Promise Kept

The sun began to dip below the western treeline, casting long, purple shadows across the Hudson River as it rolled past the estate’s outer boundaries.
Inside the mansion, the staff had prepared a quiet, celebratory dinner—simple roast chicken, roasted root vegetables, and a massive plate of fresh strawberries that Lily had insisted on inspecting herself before they were brought to the table.
At the head of the long mahogany dining table sat Lucas, flanked by Ethan on his right and Sophia and Lily on his left.
There were no armed guards standing behind the chairs. There were no coded phone calls interrupting the meal. There was only the low murmur of conversation, the clink of silverware against fine china, and the bright, musical chatter of a three-year-old explaining to Ethan why stuffed rabbits deserved to eat dessert first.
Lucas raised his crystal glass filled with sparkling apple cider, catching the eye of every person at the table.
Ethan stopped talking immediately, looking up at his father with solemn, attentive eyes. Sophia paused, her expression softening into a gentle, expectant smile. Lily tilted her head, her fork suspended halfway to her mouth.
“To new beginnings,” Lucas said, his voice deep, resonant, and entirely free of the shadows that had haunted his youth. “To loyalty that doesn't come from fear, and to the courage of those who remind us what really matters in this life.”
Ethan raised his glass first. “To new beginnings, Dad.”
Sophia raised hers next, her voice trembling slightly with emotion. “To new beginnings, Mr. Moretti.”
Lily looked around the table, copied the adults with solemn concentration, and raised her plastic cup of apple juice high in the air.

“And strawberries!” she added brightly.
The entire dining room erupted into warm, genuine laughter—a sound that echoed off the high vaulted ceilings, banishing every last ghost that had ever lingered in the halls of the Moretti estate.
