Chapter 10 - The Legacy of the Guard Dog

Three years later.

The rolling hills of the Moretti estate were blanketed in the vibrant, golden hues of an autumn afternoon. The crisp air carried the scent of falling leaves, woodsmoke, and sweet apple cider.

At nineteen years old, Bruno was ancient for a Cane Corso. His muzzle was completely white, his steps were slow and deliberate, and he spent most of his afternoons sleeping on a plush, oversized orthopedic bed placed right in the center of the main sunroom.

Yet whenever the back glass doors slid open, the old dog would still lift his massive head, his amber eyes locking onto a six-year-old girl with long dark curls who came running across the rug with a school backpack slung over one shoulder.

“Bruno! I got a gold star in math today!” Emma shouted, dropping her bag and immediately throwing her arms around the dog’s heavy neck.

Bruno let out a deep, contented huff of air, giving her cheek a slow, affectionate lick before resting his chin back down on his paws.

Standing on the sunroom patio, watching the scene through the clean glass, Alessandro held a steaming cup of coffee in one hand while his other arm was securely wrapped around Sophia’s waist.

They were married now—not in a secret ceremony behind guarded gates, but with a quiet, beautiful celebration surrounded by the few people they truly trusted, bound by an unbreakable love forged in the crucible of danger and grace.

Sophia leaned her head against Alessandro’s shoulder, watching their daughter whisper another long, imaginative secret into the ear of the most feared guard dog in the history of the underworld.

“Do you think he’ll ever truly retire?” Sophia asked softly with a warm smile.

Alessandro took a sip of his coffee, his gaze resting on the dog who had changed the trajectory of his entire empire.

“Never,” Alessandro replied, tightening his arm around his wife. “A true guardian never really retires. He just passes the watch on to someone who knows how to love him back.”

And out on the sunlit lawn, beneath the golden autumn trees, the legacy of the beast and the child lived on in perfect, untouchable peace.
